I'm going to mix it up, like Gado-Gado
mixed and unclear
If there are any mistakes, don't put them in
It's OK if I spin around?
I can do what I want? I can pick my nose even..Nah I won't
I'm nervous now
I was born in Palembang (South Sumatra) on the 23rd June 1981
I lived in Palembang until senior high school
then I went into national team training for Judo
In Puncak (West Java)
My Parents
My dad worked whatever he could
but he was a community leader (RT)
Ibu saya penjahit
Kami sangat dekat
Kami sangat terbatas waktu saya kecil
apalagi kalau dibandingkan dengan sekarang
tapi kami sekeluarga sangat bahagia
Saya adalah anak bungsu
saya punya 2 kakak laki-laki
dan 1 kakak perempuan
My childhood games were strange
I used to play in the rivers or on the grass
where I lived in Palembang there weren't any games like you have now
like ipad or anything like that
If it rained, I would always go outside and play on the grass
Sangat sulit
In our area there were neighbors who were from Padang, Java, Batak
I actually see it as a good thing
That I was raised in that way
Sekarang, saya tidak takut apapun
I went to Xaverius Maria primary school
I went to junior high school there too
I went to Xaverius 1 Bangao senior high school
I was actually quite clever
My favourite teacher was Mr Dwi
He's one of the people whose advice I still remember till today
In high school I was really naughty and I nearly didn't graduate into the year above
He came up to me, and he said "You're not going to graduate"
it was actually slightly racist
but you know, they used to tease me
"You won't graduate. As far as I am aware, people like you are clever
so why aren't you?
You won't graduate. I can guarantee it!"
It was like a slap in the face
And then he came up to me again and said
"The best kind of medicine does not taste sweet.
What I'm saying to you is bitter
and you have to think as to why I'm telling you this"
After that I started to study like crazy
and my grades improved a lot, they sky-rocketed
I suddenly understood what he meant
Something that is bitter
if we take it as bitter, it'll break us
But if we take it as motivation
we will do so much better
Puncturing someone's car tyres
Scratching someone's car
Biar seru aja
That's crazy, people are going to hate me now!
My father is very stern
If I did anything wrong, I'd definitely be punished
and it wouldn't only be verbal
I'd get physical punishments too
But the good thing I remember about being punished was
afterwards he would always take me on his motorbike
to watch a film at the cinema
watch a film and have some ice-cream
I think its good, you get something that hurts
but afterwards you get the reward
Going to the cinema after being punished
We used to go at least once a week
Waktu kecil, Ayah suka menonton Alain Delon, Chuck Noris
I didn't really understand anything, I was 5 or 6 years old
I didn't speak English, and I couldn't read either
But those are the films I remember and cowboy films
But the films I really remember
are the ones from the time of Jackie Chan
From that time, I understood them
Kenangan paling buruk waktu kecil
My Worst childhood memory was being beaten up by all the kids in the village
In that village, I was different
Sometimes I could control myself when they said
"Balik ke negara asalmu!"
Other times I couldn't control myself and I would fight with them
If I fought, and lost, actually that was a good thing
because it would be done
But if I won, the kid would call all his friends, and they'd finish me off
Sometimes I'd win, and he'd tell me
"Wait here" and 5 minutes later he'd come back with all his friends
So they'd beat me up
This is quite funny
at the time I didn't know what it actually was
but I wanted to be that person I used to see at cinema
Saya tidak tahu apa itu seorang Aktor
So when I used to go to the cinema as a kid
and I'd see their huge faces on the screen
and I'd think to myself, one day I have to be there on that screen
My face has to be as big as theirs
Itu merupakan sesuatu yang keren bagi saya
My parents were very sport-oriented
Terutama Ayah
After school, we always had to do sports
In the morning before showering we had to do pushups
In the afternoon before showering, we had to do pull-ups
So they channeled me more towards sports
It's quite funny because,
there's no way we would join a club where we had to pay
If you wanted to learn Badminton, you had to pay
There was a judo teacher at the time who used to give classes, but not many were interested
it was just you being taken down, that's all you'd learn
Tapi gratis kelasnya
So there were 5 of us kids passing by playing with our kites
and we spotted that it was for free
They even gave us the training clothes
Sometimes they would even give us food, we didn't have to pay for it
It was the teacher's way of introducing the sport to us
With each day, kita makin kuat, dan kita makin bagus
and then we would win in the local area at small competitions
I've spent almost half of my life doing Judo
Sekarang saya adalah seorang actor
tapi filosofi, perjuangan
everything that I got from those 15years doing Judo
I brought it to my acting career
When my kids are grown up
if they like photography or choreography
atau melukis, atau apapun itu
If they enjoy it
aku percaya mereka pasti akan berhasil
Kalau mereka berbakat, kenapa tidak?
Tapi kalau mereka tidak berbakat
"Kamu ngapain? Jangan bikin malu!"
Apalagi dari Ayah
When you're a kid, ofcourse you just want to play around
When he came to my Judo class, and he saw I had potential
and whenever I wanted to quit, or was lazy, he would always push me
Dia selalu berkata
"Saya janji, kamu ikutin aja kata Ayah
My mother always defended me
Jadi seimbang, seperti yin dan yang
My father was stern
and my mother was softer
But I realized, if we are soft from young
kita akan jadi lemah
And I am thankful that my father was more dominant
so I was raised under sterner conditions
If I was raised by the softer approach
I wouldn't be as strong.
Sangat penting
10 times or 100 times you fail
harus terus berjuang, terus fight
itu sangat penting
If that's not instilled in you from young
kebanyakan orang menyerah
Tapi saya dibesarkan untuk menjadi seorang fighter
Its funny, when I used to fight
when I got back home my father would ask
"Did you win or lose?"
If I won
Ayah bilang bagus
If I lost
Dia berkata
"Harus cari jalan, lain kali harus menang"
