Pediculicides are a class of drugs that are commonly used to treat lice. These are tiny
insects that live on humans and are usually found in hair.
Pediculicides work by killing lice and mites. They come in the form of liquids, shampoos,
and lotions. Some medicines that kill lice are able to kill eggs. But sometimes a second
application is required a week to 10 days after the first application, in order to kill
lice that hatched from eggs.
Pediculicides share a few common side effects, including skin, scalp, or eye itching, redness,
and irritation.
Some examples of medications in this class are Sklice, also known as ivermectin, and
Kwell, also known as lindane.
Some serious side effects can result from improper use of pediculicides. Use only as
directed. Do not allow the product to get in your eyes or mouth. If some gets in your
eyes, flush them with water right away. If your eyes are still irritated after flushing
with water, call your doctor or get medical help right away. Talk to your child's doctor
before using these products on them as some pediculicides cannot be used on infants or
very young children.
It is always a good idea to ask questions about your medication if you are unsure or
if you experience something out of the ordinary.
