The Star & Stripes Museum in Bloomfield, Missouri, immortalizes the first military news publication.
Under orders to set up camp in Bloomfield, a Union regiment stumbled upon the abandoned
newspaper office of the Bloomfield Herald. By morning, the soldiers had designed and
printed a newspaper reporting their troops' activities. They called it Stars & Stripes.
The newspaper still exists today as a publication for overseas American troops. The Stars & Stripes
Museum is a tribute to the American soldier from the Civil War to the present. The cemetery
nearby has a unique feature - causes of death are etched on the backs of its tombstones.
