I did nothing at school, I did practically one year of university,
'cause it was just wildlife, wildlife, wildlife for me.
Constantly we're having to remind our staff,
when we're doing educational tours,
that we see these ridiculous animals every single day,
but to someone not from Tasmania or Australia,
these are incredibly unique.
Have a look at a kangaroo, honestly.
They've got these ridiculous little Tyrannosaurus rex arms,
this big, long tail.
They can't even scratch their toe without leaning right down.
Then we look at our Tassie devils, we look at our quolls.
I think the list is just endless.
Our animals are like no others around the world,
and we've got so much to learn about them
and so much to do to help them at this stage.
I think when people think of wildlife rescue,
they picture people running through the bush in flash gear
and dressed like Steve Irwin, trying to rope this and lasso that.
(PHONE RINGS)
It really depends on any given situation with animal rescue
as to what we actually do.
Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Greg speaking.
I think what's fascinating about our day-to-day operations
is something new crops up every day.
Hello. Hello.
How you going? Now, you've got the little wombat.
Am I in the right place? I do. Yes, that's me.
So, some days, we might be looking at six or seven rescues
on a really good day.
Other days, we're looking at well over 30.
So, you get up every morning not knowing what to expect.
I think it's really important to look after
the animals that we should be living side by side with.
I think, sadly, there's a real theme around the world
of war with wildlife and people,
and that's incredibly frustrating for me.
You know, this is their landscape.
We're simply part of that big picture.
I think any time we see
a native animal in the wild,
it's incredibly heart-warming.
It's the same feeling as releasing an animal
and watching them toddle off into the distance.
It's a feeling that you really can't put into words.
Like a musician that plays a nice song and gets that buzz,
that's the buzz I get looking at animals in the wild.
