Hey, my name's Mike, I'm with Parks Canada, I'm a dog handler here. This is my partner Cazz, he's a general duty police dog and also really big into the avalanche profile.
Ready bud? Atta boy
So last year we responded to numerous avalanche involvements and skier accidentals just outside ski area boundaries.
So when you go out to these areas, we really like to see you guys be more prepared.
Have some good knowledge about the avalanche conditions and having the right gear.
That means having a transeiver, probe and shovel.
Not just a GoPro cam and your iphone.
To access this terrain is great, but you need good timing, some knowledge, the right gear and know how to use it.
Hey Cazzy?
Riding lifts, skiing and digging people out of the snow...that's what we do in the wintertime.
We're here at Lake Louise in Banff National Park. We're gonna hook up with Lake Louise Snow Safety.
Craig Sheperd is the forecaster. We're going to work on some new avalanche awareness and avalanche deterrent techniques with Cazz.
This is Craig Sheperd, he's the forecaster here at Lake Louise.
We're just going to talk about some of the problems he has inbounds with avalanche closures.
Thanks Mike, it's nice to you and Cazz up here.
We've had a really good early season, we've had lots of snow.
We've been able to get lots of our terrain open but we still have and issue with poachers...
...wanting to go into our closed areas.
Our areas are clearly marked with a stop sign that says "Avalanche Terrain: Closed"
It has a rope fence here but now and again people -
Hey! This is closed.
Oh, whatever guys, take your poodle for a walk. I'm skiing!
Ready Cazz, we're gonna try out that new avalanche deterrent system. Ready bud?
So that's the avalanche deterrent system that we've been working on and we use that in really, really rare occasions...
...like when you call my dog a poodle.
ouch!
Yep! That dog hits like a ton of bricks.
Don't poach. Don't poach. It's not worth it.
I'm going home.
You guys, this is Aussie Steve - Steven Gale
Let's see the damage man!
Oh yeah, there's bruises there...
This is Sheppie, the avalanche forecaster for Lake Louise. No Aussies have been hurt in the making of this film.
