>> My name is Rebecca Westerman. I'm a senior art major at the University of California,
Irvine and this year's Dalai Lama Scholar. I have designed a site-specific art installation
called "The Peace Flag Project" that will happen for one week, May 19 through 24. And
over thirty student groups have come together to make peace flags to circle Aldrich Park
at UCI, which is a half-mile circle. The intention of the project is to heighten awareness of
world issues that we aren't confronted with on a daily basis in our very comfortable lives
as Orange County residents, and to create a community action for peace and compassion
and local global responsibility. We have over thirty student groups and community groups
involved in making the peace flags. And the installation itself will be complemented with
a dedication ceremony, a closing ceremony, speakers throughout the week, a club fair,
and different events throughout the week. The peace flags themselves are going to number
over 1,000 and they'll be about three feet by three feet squared, so very large, and
hung horizontally around the park; and they are conceptually modelled after Tibetan prayer
flags, which are hung to blow in the wind and meant to disseminate peace throughout
the world. These flags, although they're much larger and they're covered with statements
and information about ongoing world conflicts and world issues, are meant to spread information
and meant to spread inspiration to be more active and peaceful and compassionate.
