>>Erik: How did you become interested in writing and as an English major, what types of writing
appealed to you most at the University of Michigan?
>>Mark: My mother was a schoolteacher and we were constantly brought up with reading
and writing. Things like Sunday morning for us were spent sitting around discussing newspaper.
From a very early age that was fostered into what I wanted to do. When I reached university
level, I was weighing career paths. I decided to go into English because it would allow
me to build out my writing skills but also more so important than technical writing,
communication was a really big aspect of that. So, rather than go down a specific path like,
say, a business path or accounting or niche thing, I wanted something that was a bit wider
and would give me a little better idea of what I wanted to do once I got outside of
college.
