I'm at Toronto City Hall for an historical moment.
The Brazilian flag will be raised here for the 1st time in history...
...in an initiative by the Portuguese and MP Mario Silva.
Celebrating Brazil's independence day, we'll go from here to the Brazilfest.
This a Brazilian edition of Panorama and Brazilfest is an annual summer festival in Toronto.
And from there we'll go to the Brazlian Heat.
A Brazilan-themed night at Toronto's biggest club, The Guvernment.
But what am I exactly going to do here? I have no idea.
And why is that a Portuguese, not a Brazilian, had the initiative...
...to celebrate our independence from Portugal? I have even less idea.
But I'll try to find out.
It's a very special date in Brazil.
And this gets even more special abroad.
Brazilian National Anthem
The celebration was great, everything beautiful...
...but why is that a Portuguese had the initiative to raise the Brazilian flag...
...and celebrate Brazil's independence at City Hall?
This shows me one of two things -
The Brazilian community in Toronto is extremely disorganized...
...to the point someone from another nation decides to celebrate our independence.
Or option two - Politicians are always opportunists.
I'll stay with both options and I'm going to the Brazilfest because I've had enough.
Sun, summer, beach, parties... The rain we had in the morning is gone.
And I'm at Sunnyside Beach in Toronto.
To check the 5th edition of Brazilfest. Let's get in.
We'll now talk to Sandro Liberato...
How's it going, Sandro?
Let me make that same face.
Now tell me, what are you doing here today?
I'm displaying my art. This is pretty much my first exhibition in T.O.
I'm also doing some body painting and I'll do that on you later on.
Naked body painting?
Are you going to paint the Brazilian elephant's trunk or what?
No, there's no elephant here today.
It's gonna be the tiny Brazilian earthworm then.
But let's get serious now. What are you gonna do?
Let's do something in your arm. Should we do it now? Let's go!
Sandro, what's the difference, let's say, from painting on canvas...
...and painting a soft and silky skin like mine?
Soft and oily like yours?
I'm with Tony, the organizer of the event. Congratulations.
-This is the 5th edition, right? -Exactly, 5th Brazilfest.
And what's different of this edition? You're now back from the islands.
After the problems with the rain. Tell us about that.
It's a crazy story.
We were having the festival at the islands but there was some really heavy rain.
We even had to cancel Brazilfest.
But now we're here at Sunnyside Beach Park.
We're organizing the event again specifically on September 7, Brazilian Independence Day.
It rained in July, on the day the event was originally planned.
You guys had to cancel it. It was the heaviest rain I've seen here. Unbelievable.
But it was also raining this morning! What's going on?
Can I say God is Brazilian but he doesn't like a good party?
Batudaca Carioca stopped for a bit so I'll try to talk to some people.
Are you enjoying the party?
It's really good! This 'picanha' steak is great, music is good.
That's my question. Are you enjoying more the 'picanha' or the party?
It's a tough question. It's hard to refuse some good picanha.
Party is great, full of people, Brazilians, you meet a lot of new people.
The food is great, there's a nice view, I'm loving it!
We're with a French Canadian here, who understands a bit of Portuguese.
Is it on? Ok, so let's keep walking.
How are you guys enjoying the party?
It's great! The weather wasn't the best but we are Brazilians...
...you know, it's hard to put us down.
You do some freestyle beatboxing, don't you? Do it on top of this samba beat.
What are the main attractions here today?
Well, today we have some great artists from our city.
Batucada Carioca is here today with Maninho Costa. Salviano Pessoa, the main attraction of the day.
I'm outside with Salviano Pessoa who'll be playing later on at 8:30.
8:30 we'll start to explode with Brazilian energy.
Bringing a bit of axé music and energy from Bahia, Brazil.
You are going to feel that from home, watching us at PanTV with lots of energy!
We're here in Toronto, my great friend Felipe, my friend Sandro...
5 minutes later...
You have to feel the energy of Carnival and Brazil.
Ok, ok, but now let me interview you! What are you playing here tonight?
I'm bringing a bit of Carnival from Bahia.
I'll play axé, some forró, lots of surprises.
And also my own compositions because I'm here promoting my work.
Let's jump my brother! I wanna see you here on PanTV.
You know what, I'll even learn how to dance because you never stop.
Tell me this now... when did we meet? I think it was last Friday...
You told me something about pornophony. What is that?
We were discussing that at the bar.
Because the content of lyrics in a song is really important.
The songwriter has lots of responsibility when he writes lyrics.
But sometimes the lyrics are so meaningless...
...that on the same way we have the ***, which is visual, graphic...
...there is pornophony, which is meaningless, aggressive, explicit music.
Unfortunately this is the reality today.
I love music. I love all types of music.
But there are many beautiful things to write about.
Like this one.
He's starting singing at every second!
If I throw you some words will you freestyle with them?
Ok, so Brazilfest in Toronto.
It's a nine room nightclub complex. Capacity of 10.000 people.
This main room behind me has 22 thousand square feet.
On top of that, an annual Brazilian-themed night.
I'm at the Guvernment and this is the Brazilian Heat.
Brazilian Heat is an annual Brazilian night at the biggest club in Toronto.
This is our 6th edition and it's a pleasure to host this type of event.
The public is varied. We have Brazilians, Canadians, Chinese, people from everywhere.
And what is the main difference between a regular night here and the Brazilian night?
The Brazilian energy and happiness is a big difference here tonight.
We're here with DJ Eddy who's playing here tonight.
You've played here before, right?
Yes this is the 6th edition but we always try make something different.
We try to mix electonic and Brazilian music.
People always complain if you don't play lots of Brazilian music.
Any surprises in your set here tonight?
In Brazil right now it's all about the "Creu" song.
So I prepared a special remix of "Creu".
We gotta dance the "Creu" at the club to do the "Creu" somewhere else later on, right?
I think the place he chose to host this event is perfect...
...because it's the biggest club in Toronto...
...and he is able to mix Brazilians and Canadians together.
So there's a nice mix in here.
It's not only samba, samba, samba and Brazil.
There are lots of Canadians, dance music and Brazil. It's a nice mix.
My name is Clau
And you're working here tonight, but having fun as well, right?
Yes, we dance, it's a job but we also have a lot of fun. It's great.
For how many hours are you going to dance here tonight?
We've already danced. There's still another set downstairs but that's it.
Then you'll have fun until 6, 7 am.
