DENTON TARVER: Today on Urban Gardener, we're headed to a
really cool roof deck in the heart of Fort Greene.
This is a plant called Taxus.
You can use it as a hedge plant.
My guess is that it's probably used to help
to define the space.
This is a garden that's kind of an island right up on top
of the roof.
It can make you feel like you're out
exposed to the elements.
So this helps us to feel more comfortable when we're up on a
space like this.
Not that many things will survive on the roof.
So we have to be careful and judicious about the types of
plants that we put into these environments.
And one of the ways to really imbue it with personality is
to just find something that you like.
He might have found this at a garage sale that might have
been on the street.
Or he might have shot it himself.
MALE SPEAKER: One of the best things about this property is
that it sits little below the tops of most of the trees in
the neighborhood.
So when you look out, it's relatively private and has a
real organic, green feeling before you get
a view of the city.
This is Taishan.
DENTON TARVER: This is Taishan?
MALE SPEAKER: Taishan, yeah.
He's got a name.
He's been with us for a while.
We just like him because he's cheesy, and he's really nice.
We don't take ourselves too seriously here, which I think
is important.
This piece of driftwood I got it at
Lake Cumberland, Kentucky.
Urban gardening, it's like a balance of sculpture and mass
and volume mixed with hot spots.
DENTON TARVER: Did you do this on purpose with the Virginia
creeper over here?
MALE SPEAKER: Oh, absolutely.
It's just a simple plant, not a lot of show.
I think that some of the better gardens just have a
large percentage of basic elements, which is kind of
what you want, I think, in a space like this.
It's more about hopping out and feeling like you're part
of something bigger.
When I moved up here, I was looking at this as a place
that felt more homey.
Having this rooftop space doubled my square footage in
my apartment.
And in the summertime, this is where everybody hangs out.
Everybody says, ooh, sanctuary.
Seems a little cliche, but at the same time, that's what's
great about gardens.
Just having the ability to crop up and watch the sunset,
or stay up here at night.
It just feels open.
And I feel exposed to the elements.
And the people are like, ooh--
DENTON TARVER: People are just--
MALE SPEAKER: It's so nice.
It's so cool.
Look around and it's good.
DENTON TARVER: Well, thank you so much for walking us around
the garden.
This is really, really amazing.
MALE SPEAKER: Yeah, it's a long walk.
DENTON TARVER: It's really great to meet you.
See you next time on Urban Gardener.
