Spring is nearly in full bloom, and nature appears eager to get things in full swing.
Korea's cherry blossoms are forecast to bloom a little bit earlier this year, and annual
festivals across the country are gearing up to delight visitors.
Our Paul Yi has this report.
The budding of Korea's forsythias and azaleas are said to be the initial messengers of spring,
but the breath-taking bloom of cherry blossoms marks the height of the new season.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that thousands of cherry trees across the
country will blossom about a week earlier than last year.
The onset of an early blooming season is mainly the result of higher-than-average temperatures
during the first two months of this year.
Residents on the southern coast of Jeju Island will be the first to enjoy the bright flowers
on March 17th, while those in the cities of Busan and Gwangju will have to wait until
a few days later, near the end of the month.
The fresh blooming cherry blossoms will then cascade further north, basking the nation
in waves of spectacular petals, with Seoul likely to see its first flowers around April
9th.
Up to 16-hundred spring blossoms are expected to come to a full bloom at Yeoido Park around
mid-April, kicking off a festival period in the capital city.
The series of street performances and art exhibitions will echo throughout Korea during
the months of April and May as each city celebrates its own springtime festival.
It's one of the most best times to travel the country, when the landscape is carpeted
in soft petals.
The return to warmer weather and the abundance of cultural events also provide truly scenic
opportunities, to lift spirits and bring family and friends together.
