Fern spike
This is what the graph tells you.
Before the catastrophe,
fern fossil spores accounted for 15-30% of the entire pollen record.
They appeared on Earth first
then later gave way to higher animals and plants.
However, 65 million years ago, a catastrophe hit Earth.
On the land of devastation, fern recovered first
and started to cover up the empty ground.
Fern fossil spores took up 99% of the entire pollen record of the K-T boundary.
Earth turned into a world dominated by fern.
After some time though,
the soil recovered
and other plants recovered.
And
fern returned to account for 15-30%.
The ecosystem was restored
and the rate fell to 15-30%, as it was before the catastrophe.
