The coastal area of Louisiana in particular is losing coastline at a very rapid rate and
so one of the solutions to stop the loss of the coastal wetlands and helping restore those
coastal wetlands is to provide breakwaters to reduce the wave action that's destroying
the coastline.
We're using Riverlite to protect the coastal areas by creating...by building berms out
of lightweight aggregate in large geotextile bags.
We construct a small levy by stacking those bags in the water.
By putting lightweight aggregate in these large bags we can control the shape of the
berm and we can reduce the load on those soft soils by about half.
Ordinarily, you would build those berms out of riprap but because of how heavy rip-rap
is and how soft the soil is below the waterline the rip-rap would just sink.
We still used riprap but we only use the rip-rap to armor the berm that is cover the bags to
protect the bags and keep them in place.
It's really rewarding to us to have a Louisiana facility that employs residents of Louisiana
and utilizes our material in projects that are helping serve the state of Louisiana by
protecting and preserving the coastline.
