[Constance Whiston] Casting a fly rod is easy. Start with about
thirty feet of line out on the water, and the tip down to the surface. Put your thumb
on top of the rod grip and hold the fly line in your left hand. As you lift the fly line
up off the water bend at the elbow and back cast, forward cast and then stop and lower
the rod tip down. It’s a four part process, lift the fly rod up, back cast, forward cast,
and the tip goes back down. What you need to keep in mind as you do these four parts
is to keep the rod tip in a nice straight path. Whether you are casting vertically or
horizontally the rod tip will need to be in a nice straight path and you’ll be looking
at the loops to form nice tight narrow loops. It’s important that you stop abruptly on
the back cast and the forward cast to allow the fly line to unfold behind you and in front
of you. When you’re casting a fly rod your casting the fly line and not the fly. It’s
different than conventional fishing because you don’t actually need anything on the
end of the leader to cast. Now you may wonder where you can get casting lessons. Well I
recommend you try your local fly fishing club. Look up the Federation of Fly Fishers on the
internet and then look under Texas and you will find seventeen or more fly fishing clubs
in the state of Texas. There’s casting instructors at each fly fishing club and they would be
happy to give you lessons. You don’t have to be a perfect caster to fly fish in Texas.
Texas rivers and lakes are loaded with fish so get a lesson and get out there and fly
fish Texas!
