Hi! My name is Ashley Ludman from Seaside Yoga, here to tell you a little bit about
Vinyasa Yoga. So, Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word and it actually means "to place in a special
way." And, if you are practicing Vinyasa Yoga, you will notice that there is a specific fluidity
between postures. So, specifically you are placing your movements and your breath in
a special way. So for example, when you raise up and stand tall and lift your ribcage up,
you are receiving an inhalation. When you are folding forward, oftentimes you are exhaling.
So, you are placing your body in a specific way and you are also placing your breath in
a specific way. So, I am going to demonstrate a very typical sequence. It is called a Sun
Salutation sequence and I will talk you through using your breath with your movement. And,
this is Vinyasa Yoga. So, I will begin by standing at the front of the mat and taking
a breath in. Exhaling, bring your hands to your heart. Inhale, stand tall. Exhale, fold
forward. Forward bend. Inhale, look forward, lengthening your spine from your pelvis outward.
Then, exhale and fold back in. Inhale, stepping back to Plank which looks like a push-up.
Exhale and lower to your belly, maintaining the strength from your core. Then, inhale
into Cobra. Opening the chest. Softening the jaw and throat. Then exhale to Downward Facing
Dog. And, we will stay in Downward Facing Dog for a couple of breaths. And, on the next
inhalation, looking forward between your hands, exhale and step forward, folding into your
forward bend. Bringing your hands to your hips, inhale, come up half-way. And exhale,
ground your legs, ground into your feet. Inhale and stretch back up, bringing your hands back
to Namaste position. And, that was a Sun Salutation sequence. Very typical in a Vinyasa Yoga class.
So, that is Vinyasa Yoga, placing your body and your breath in a very specific way. Hope
you had fun!
