I'm Susan Letvak and I'm an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing here at UNC Greensboro.
I didn't start out to be in teaching. I'm a nurse and I've wanted to be a nurse since
I was a little girl and then I fell in love with teaching and I realized I could make
just as much of a difference with patient care teaching nursing as I did being a nurse
at the bedside. My philosophy of teaching is the same as my philosophy in life which
is a relational ontology. I believe that we are all in relationship with each other so
students learn better and I teach better when I am in a relationship with students. My goal
is is to teach nurses how to think. Think like a nurse. Think in ever changing health
care environments, ever changing medical knowledge.. You have to know where to find information
and how to think on your feet. I don't believe that I"m at a level above my students. I look
at us as all peers in the classroom ,peer sin learning. I learns as much from my students
as I hope they learn from me. I try to teach by experiential learning and I believe that
by doing you learn more and t hat's especially true with nursing. You sure cannot learn how
to be a nurse and care for patients by reading it out of a text book. Success of a teacher
is that students excl over and above them and I've been now teaching for almost twenty
years and it's so exciting to see some of my graduates now teaching at major universities,
winning major nursing awards around the country. So for me, my sing of being an accomplished
teacher is having successful students go on and do great things.
