Hi, I'm Christine Chitnis, the author of "Markets
of New England" and Yankee's craft blogger, also known as the Crafty Yankee. I'm here
at the Peterborough farmer's market, and I'm doing a little book signing here today at
the market, which is also included in the book as one of the New Hampshire picks for
the farmer's markets. The book takes readers through 50 farmer's markets and art markets
all through New England. There are about six per state, divided between the farmer's and
the art events. Last summer, I went to about 65 different markets, and 50 of them made
the cut. I wrote the book because I felt like there wasn't a great guide to markets in New
England. Really, there was no guide. There was no comprehensive guide that if you wanted
to travel around and on your travels maybe stop in an art event or maybe take in a farmer's
market, there was really no resource available to do that. So, this is really the first of
its kind, and I'm very proud of it. It's all about shopping local, supporting our local
farmers and artisans and keeping our local economies healthy. One of my favorites
was the Portland, Maine Farmer's Market, and I think I like that so much because it has
such a fabulous variety of food items. So if you're a foodie, it's just a great market.
Really unique finds. So that was a great market. The other one is the Coventry Farmer's
Market, which is in Connecticut, and that just feels like a country fair every Sunday
and it's just very boisterous. It's a great atmosphere, great offerings, great produce.
You can actually take the whole family and just make it a whole morning because it's
worth it. Then the other one that I really loved was the Coastal Grower's Market,
which is in Saunderstown, Rhode Island. It's set on a farm, which I love, because it just
ties in everything that you love about a farmer's market. There are animals, so if you bring
the kids, they can take a tour of the farm and see the pigs and the chickens and turkeys.
There's yoga that happens out on the lawn. It's just a great family friendly market,
and, again, really wonderful produce offerings. So those are some of my favorite ones.
