Hello and welcome to the first episode of bacio-di-tosca.tv!
My name is Dörthe - and my name is Joerg!
today we are in Mechtshausen
in front of the Wilhelm Busch house!
Wilhelm Busch would have celebrated his 170. birthday!
We like to find out something about Wilhelm Busch
In this house he spent the last 10 years of his live
with his sister! We are waiting for Mrs. Reinecke
who will tell about Wilhelm Busch in more detail!
She will also show us the house!
Have fun!
This is the entrance of the house
with a beautifull door and a unique handle
have a look!
This really looks cute!
Now Mrs. Reinecke arrived!
she is the chairwoman of the promotion group "Wilhelm Busch Haus"
she will tell us about the house and the promotion group!
Thanks for asking me
even when I was too late today
The promotion group consists of local people
who will take care of the house
where Wilhem Busch spent the last 10 years
and also for cultural activities
as there are lot of different venues
as a book circle or
a cafe for young and old people
or bigger events like on the 10. of June
there is a big garden party
with a big buffet and Jazz music
all these activities should attract people to visit the house
In November there is a feast with a three course meal
and a cabaret show in between!
The house is opend 2 hours a day
except on Mondays!
The promotion group will also take care of
the visitors and run the cafe
... like you do now for us!
The house was always property of the church
and was used as a vicarage
Wilhelm Busch moved in with his nephew who
became a priest in this town
today the priest lives a neighboring place
Thius is luck for us
as we have more space!
For example the room we are sitting now
was used as a community place
and the priest office
The priests family lived here too
Upstairs there are the privte rooms from Wilhelm Busch
since 2006 these rooms
were used as show rooms
so we can offer more than the two rooms from Wilhelm Busch
Like reading sessions!
or cabaret - we can use these rooms!
I'm not from Mechtshausen - I'm from Hannover!
when we came 1979 to this place
I met a old lady who
was a maid at this place
this was very exciting as she knows Wilhem Busch personally!
She described him as very friendly
but he always kept a distance
Every day he made his round
through the village but mainly
in the landscape - on the top of the mountain called "Heber"
Where he sits on a bench
and looked on the village
"Seesen" and "Rüden"
He liked to watched things from a distance
but he don't like to be in the center
If you look at his live he always
tended to live in small, rural places
He lived in big cities as well,
like Munich, Düsseldorf and Antwerp
but for the craetive phases he prefered rural places
like Mechtshausen where the street end in the nowhere
But I think this is what he looked for to find peace
He often refers to the nature in his letters
where he described the prospering sping on the hazelnut tree and on the snowdrops
he orientated his sense of time on the rhythem of nature
We announced the 170. birthday of Wilhelm Busch
but in fact is was the ... ?
180. Birthday!!!!
Wilhelm Busch was born 1832
the same year whem Goethe died!
He celebrated his 70. and 75. birthday
in this house!
On these birthdays he were not participating
he moved out as he don't like
when he get so much attention
so he escaped and returned after his birthday
So he was a loner?
Yes! He liked to be alone!
He also don't like when his work get to much attention
There is a funny anecdote:
He sits in a train and there are other people
who quote on one of his work
So he played sleeping!!!
Some other would have loved to disclose their identity
but he DONT!
Today he would have prefered only to sell books
He never get married and stayed a bachelor - right?
Yes - this is a common question!
He onced asked for hand of a young girl
a girl from "Wolfenbüttel"
where his brother lived who got a can factory
He asked for the hand of this young girl
but the father of the girl refused
as he don't had any money at this time!
He first started earning money when
he released "Max and Moritz" what was 1865
We don't know if the father would have agreed
when he would have asked some years later but he never did!
But he managed to live a family
so the family of "Nöldeke" became his family
when he lived at his sister
he cared about his nephews and paid for their education
That's also explained why he moved to Mechtshausen
Otto Nöldeke who became a priest here liked to have his mother with him
so they have to decide what to do with uncle "Wilhelm"
In his letters you can find when he came to this place
and examine this place
and he liked to live here in this quite place
So he moved here!
In his last 10 years he spent here he never draw any cartoons
he prefered to read and spent time on philosophy
he wrote a lot of letters and wrote poems
but he don't draw any cartoos here!
The book "Kritik des Herzens" was written here?
there you can find the poet "Oh Du die mir die Liebste war"
is there a specific person that he had in mind?
I have it here ...
But then I have to get my glases!
I have it here ... where is my handbag?
you can download the music on our page: www.bacio-di-tosca.tv
This is the poet I mentioned!
Very nice - beautiful voice!!!
So I asked my self if this is related to a specific person?
How to turn if off ... ???
I don't know 100% but in my opinion
there is no specific person!
maybe this is his secret ... !?
Of course there are some ladies he was in contact with
like Mrs. Kessler from Frankfurt and also her dauthers
but these are platonic relations
... as far we know ;)
It's the same like Goethe where
you don't really know what was platonic and what not
I've just recently read a quote from Wilhelm Busch
where he said "platonic love between men and woman
is like aiming without actually shooting!"
this sounds like a good diagnose!
but I think he was a Gentleman who don't talk about his afairs ...?
Yes - he also don't like to give a deeper insight
in his inner life!
This could also be found in his poems
where he differnciate between outer appearance and inner life
I have another question about "Max and Moritz"
there is a lady, her name is Edith Braun
She has raised the theory that "Max and Moritz" would be
a political satire - have you heared about this?
I don't think so, because Wilhelm Busch
was not political at all
of course this book critize
the class-conscious society during that time
with the bourgeois!
He was raised Protestant
his education was not that strict when he lived
with his uncle, but of course
the eduation during that time was very strict
so I think that with "Max and Moritz"
this was put in the pillory
So these kind of people will be critized
who where very narrow minded like the tailor
or "Widow Bolte"
I think this make it very appealing
to see that the teacher explodes
... this is even funny today - what I know
from my own experiance as an teacher
So if you call this poltical I would agree
But what figures he had in mind is very clear
as this is him and his friend Erich Bachmann were the role models
When he came to "Evergötzen" as a small child
and were raised and educated by the priest "Erich Kleine"
he found an open minded environment
without beating that was usual during that time
so he met his friend "Erich Bachmann" the miller's son
they are playing some tricks on people
for example they roll in mud and let it dry in the sun
this would have inspired him to the scene in "Max and Moritz"
where they get backed in the oven!
If you look at the mill that is drawn in the cartoon
there you can see the simularities to the mill in "Evergötzen"
So he used some own childhood memory?
Exactly!
OK - we go upstairs now to see the two private rooms
we are in the first floor now!
In this two rooms Wilhelm Busch spent the last 10 years of his life
this was his study room and next door the bedroom
it's all the original furniture and floor
Often people think these rooms should be more pretentious
but I think this will refect his live style
and it is of course typical in this age!
Here is the sofa and his chair with the oven
you really can imagine how nice it would be sitting in front of the oven reading a book
Wilhelm Busch was a very strong smoker
you often see him on pictures smoking a cigaret or a cigar
he smocked up to 65 cigarets a day
he get 2 toxications from smoking
so this was really more than just enjoyment
and he liked to drink a glass of redwine in the evening
but that's and his travels was all the luxuary he had
the next room is the bedroom!
this room is even more spartan than the other
the table for washing and the bed
often people ask for a closet - I can not answer this!
maybe the closet was in this corner ...
but you have to take into account that he lived most of the time
in the family of "Nöldeke" - so he was not locked alone in this rooms
he could spent time in the libuary and with the family and used this rooms for his private time
And this was his pisspot?
Yes that was his pisspot!
Does he also died in this house? In this bed?
Yes, he died in this bed!
his dead was not a flight - he passed away on senility!
That's good to know!
these are painters from Netherland
he originally liked to be a painter and choosed dutch painters to be ideal!
This was the reason to cancel his study in Hannover
and went to the University of art in Düsseldorf and to Antwerp and Munich
that's why we put some of these pictures on his wall!
Than he reallised that he not become as good as them
and he scraped much of his works
drawing cartoons was more or less accidential during his time in Munich
when he joined the association "Jung München"
and draw caricatures he get the idea of cartoons!
It's time to say goodbye!
... Oh - yes!
Thank you very much for all the information!
there were some very interessting facts that can not be found very easily in the web!
I hope this inspires you to come here and see this place on your own!
We appreciate your interest as we like to attract people for this house
We are now in front of the small cemetery in Mechtshausen
where Wilhelm Busch is buried as you can see on the carving in this stone
We go inside and visit his grave!
I follow you ...!
I can't open the door!
40 meters ... in which direction?
left? - I don't know!
I can only orientate in a shoe store!
walk on the grass
It's not very big, so it should be easy to find!
"Wilhelm Probst" ... two times?
another "Wilhelm" - but no "Busch"
They are all called "Wilhelm" ... something
We are too studied to find the grave!
they should explain it a bit more detailed!
Maybe over there! The big grave?
I think we are right!
Here lays "Wilhelm Busch"
We now arrived in Wiedensahl in front of the house where
Wilhelm Busch was born!
Beside me is Mr. Sölter from the promotion group "Wilhelm Busch Wiedensahl"
Can you please tell us something about the house?
Since 2002 we operate the house on our own
with support from the government
We are in front of the oldest part of the house
where you can find the room where he was born and the "peoples room"!
This house was saved in 1930 from beeing dismantled!
This was the starting point of the "Wilhelm Busch association" who run the house till 2002
Should we have a look inside?
OK - than we go inside!
My handbag !!!!!
Ok - let's enter! Please go ahead
Just a moment ... I have to put my handbag somewhere!
Hello - can I leave my handbag somewhere here? Yes - great!
In the old farmhouse it's very cold at the moment what's nice at these outside temperatures
This room could also be used for venues!
In the backside you find the historical rooms
on the left is our treasure chest where we show original paintings!
we show three priorities of his life:
cartoons, paintings and poets
upstairs we have a special exhibition since 14- days
where we show the friendship between Wilhelm Busch and the liqueur
manufacturer Augst Meyer who was a good painter and draw caricature as well
unfortunatly August Meyer never get that much attention then Wilhelm Busch
But anyway - they both enjoyed liqueur ... and smocked?
Of course - it's well known that Wilhelm Busch had two toxications from smoking
This is the "peoples room" and the room where Wilhem Busch was born!
This is a typical bed from the age
it's called "Anderthalbschläfer"!
where you sleep half upright
This was the bed where Wilhelm and his six brothers and sisters slept
This is really the bed where he slept?
Yes - this was part of the furniture in the house
What is the meaning of "peoples room"?
In this room all "people" in the house met to take the meals!
How was Wilhelm Busch as a child?
There are very little information as he moved to his uncle at a age of nine
But we know that some of the stories he did with his friend "Bachmann" are true
and became part of "Max and Moritz"
At the mill they roll in the mud and let it dry in the sun
what inspires him to the scene at the bakery where they droped in the pastry
There is also a footbridge at the mill there will be saw for sure!
We are on the central point of the exhibition
where we show the "foreign book" as Meyer would call his guest book!
where Busch is also leave a note on the 29.January 1882
with the very famous slogan:
"It's nice to see friends comming -
it's also nice when they stay and spent the time with us -
but when they finally leave it's also nice!"
I hope this is not true for us?
We see here "Hans Huckebein" the raven - we know that he liked redwine - what about liqueur?
Wilhem Busch also drank beer during his time in Munich!
On his walks he entered the local pub to drink 2-3 beer and a *** before he returned
This happend more often when he was not satisfied with his paintings
When he was young and started his career as a painter
he had ambitous goals to be as good as dutch painters
He feels that he was not as good as them
so he don't like his own paintings
The "Nöldeke" nephews saved most of his works from beeing destroyed
Most of his works are very small like a post card - a letter format is quite big for him
He painted on every kind of material, wrapping paper, wood or a shopping bag
Hello ... ! ... no that's my brother!
We are in front of the "St. Nikolai" Church in Wiedensahl
It's known that he was very skeptical about the church!
This brings him into trouble later!
So he sneaked in the church as one of the latest and hide behind the organ
and also leave as one of the first to avoid contact with other people!
This is the Wilhem Busch statue that was build one year after his death
Here is also the vicarage where he lived with his sister and her husband.
There is a third place where he lived after the death of his sisters husband
This house is not in the original state and therefore no historical place anymore.
Beside the house where Wilhelm Busch was born is a cafe called "Busch Keller"
It's run by the grand-grand niece of Wilhelm Busch "Friederike Wilkening".
So go to have some cake!
Here is the cake buffet!
lot's of nice cakes!
I will choose "russian apple cake" - what about you Joerg!?
I go for a cheesecake!
So here is the grand-grand niece of Wilhem Busch!
Hello! - hello!
Are all the cakes homemade?
Yes - almost every cake is homemade . especially the fruitcakes and the tart!
Oh yes - please show me the tart!!!
They are really looking good! Maybe I'll choose the tart!
May I help you?
This is Tiramisu - tart!
and this is egg liqueur tart!
This is our best selling tart we have!
so you have regular customers for the tart?
Yes - there are lot of people coming only for this tart!
Are the recipes old ones from the Wilhelm Busch family?
Yes - for example the fruitcake it's old style from old recipes!
at the moment it's rhubarb season!
I received an old recipe book from my grand-grandma she loved to bake!
so we tried lot's of these recipes and some became a high runner!
Behind you we see different liqueurs?
Yes - I try different styles!
So you became drunk from trying all these different styles?
No - I can't try them all every evening!
what is a pity as they change in taste as I only use natural ingredients!
so some of them need up to a year to develop their taste!
So I don't know the actual taste!
So it's a surprise?
Yes - a bit of surprise is part of the fun!
Do you also have the "Meyers bitter" from Buschs friend August Meyer?
Yes - of course! It's over here!
We have two styles - they make "nice" spots on the tablecloth!
One of these got a higher percentage of alcohol - right?
This one have 38% and this one 35%!
I've not directly compared these two but I in my opinion they are smell very simular!
We try the cake first and then we maybe need one of these liqueurs!?
But I think it's better eating something first before I try the liqueur!
Otherwise I will drop from the chair!
Thanks you very much for the information and your time! It was very interesting!
Cheers!!!!
So this was our first episode of Bacio di Tosca TV
I hope you'll liked it!
We will enjoy the cake - Yes the eggliqueur tart with wallnuts and cherries!
Unfortunatly we haven't received the recipe - it's a secret!
But you can come to this place and try it on your own!
Take care - we see you in the next episode!
Bye-bye!!!!
