Hello, and welcome to Mundo Pato.
My name is Ricardo Correa and I'm here to tell you about the wonderful community of therapists and educators that we've put together for you.
.
I came upon autism in the same way that many people come upon autism...it affects their family.
680,000 families are affected by this every year
And, when they go out there to find out what it is, they're going to find a lot of information.
But, unfortunately, while there is a lot of good information, it's in a very chaotic format, difficult to understand.
What we wanted to do at Mundo Pato was something a little different.
We wanted to go ahead and take all of the therapists that are out there treating autism in the field every day, and help put them in your living room.
They've all written courses that are designed to train, educate and help, not only the child, but also the family, and all of the peer group and the extended community at large.
...
I can talk to people about this, we can reach a larger audience to work with educators, therapists and parents to all support the child who has autism,
and to give them a full spectrum of support.
What it is, is making data systems much more efficient and readily available, so that we can share information within our centers,
but also across centers, so we can really understand what other people are doing and then benefit from that.
The second project we're working on is to benefit parents and practitioners that are working directly with students.
What we're developing is a very easy, yet very powerful, assessment tool,
and what's great about this assessment tool is that it's directly linked to our third project
which is our most exciting project, it's all about the kids.
Our third project focuses on providing direct teaching, directly to students using virtual world and touch-screen technologies.
We're going to be able to completely expand the boundary of when and where therapy can be received for children,
and, in a way that children are going to really love to have around and have as a part of their lives.
We can reach so many more families.
Each consultant or therapist, like myself, can only treat ten to fifteen children,
you know, for our own case load. But, something like Mundo Pato and
through the technology that we're able to have today, we can reach thousands.
...
There's a funny thing that happens with being a human being,
and, I've seen it for 27 years, and watched this process.
If a person has two eyes and a mouth and two ears, even if they're living with a constitutional difference
in how their body works, other people will look at us and think, well we must be the same.
I, myself, am on the autism spectrum, and so, I, work as an advocate, a speaker and a consultant,
giving voice to a lot of people who have trouble sometimes giving their own opinions and views and sharing their own perspective with other people.
As an occupational therapist, I draw upon a broad training in sensory integration and neurodevelopment,
in various educational approaches to autism and in relationship based therapy to provide children and parents with experiences
that address some of the core issues of concern in autism.
As a functional nutritionist, I'm like a detective, and I'm aiming to get to the core of people's health problems.
So, I'm looking at their symptoms, I'm often looking at bloodwork, and I'm looking at what's going on with their
overall behavior, to get in deep and figure out where we rectify problems.
And we're going to do that through food and supplementation to bring them health and balance.
It's not uncommon that a child with speech and communication challenges, sensory perception challenges, or social struggles
presents in a primary care office setting, in a way that's far different than a neurotypical child.
They look different and they act different and, if a child with autism has a headache, or has reflux disease, or abdominal pain,
they may not look or act in the same way that a neurotypical child does. So, it's my job as a primary care provider,
to spend the time to uncover any physical struggles a child is going through, and treat those adequately, making sure that I'm recognizing them, if they're there.
As a classical homeopath, I am treating the person not the diagnosis.
So, in conventional medicine, they're really trying to figure out what kind of diagnosis the child has,
and they've got maybe one, two or three different pharmaceutical interventions that can be used, "one size fits all" for that particular diagnosis.
I think in pictures, just like a person with autism. The experience I've had connecting with kids was that,
in the pictures, we could see what the other person was thinking, and we could have a communication, we could have that connection.
And when I invited parents into the process of talking through the art with their child, suddenly, their relationship opened up and they had real connection
because they could see what their child was experiencing, and their child had so much to say to their family.
