Hi friends would you like to try an exciting sport?
so why not try ice hockey
there are many clubs and schools in London
open to all ages
kids in town will show you juniors playing in a popular club in East London
What skills do beginners practice?
They practice skating and they do forward skating
backwards skating they do crossovers they also do stoping
which is the ice hockey stop
and they do puck handling which is handling the puck and passing
and shooting and scoring if they can
and uh... team skills as well they practice team skills
what's your position?
I play golie for the under 10s
and winger for the under 12s
and..why did you choose ice hockey?
uh...
well when I was on holiday in 2011 I watched a movie called The Mighty Ducks
which inspired me
cause it was a bunch of school kids going to play hockey against really
tough teams
Would you like to be a professional?
well yeah i'd like to be a professional like Crossby I think he's a very good
centre actually
Is hockey a safe sport?it's a relatively safe sport
they wear a bunch of equipment and they do get bumps and bouchs about
but it's normally fairly safe not many injuries
I'm here with Elliot who will shows us what players have to wear
so basically
you have to wear skates
you have to wear knee pads on both legs
you have to wear socks
you have to wear shorts that cover your legs so you don't get hurt
you have to wear arm pad
you have to wear chest armour to protect your chest and the back
you have to wear helmet with a visor
and it's a cage so you don't get hit by a puck which is the ball we use to play
you also have to use a stick
to hit the puck with to score
you also have gloves to hold the stick and protect your hands from getting hits from the puck
and you also need a neck guard because there's a slight gap
in between
your chest armour and
and your helmet so you don't get hit in the neck with the puck
Kids in Town are here to watch Lee Valley plays Streatham
Is hockey getting more popular in the UK? it's a little bit
but we're still very short of people to play hockey
and I think we'got about 70 people in our club probably the average for most clubs in the country
