You ready? Set, go!
(Jonathan) The battle of the brothers kicked off with a 3-day renovation challenge.
(David) There you go!
Team Jonathan struggled to keep things together.
Everybody is covered in debris right now, and I'm wondering where is Shannon?
[gasps] Look at these fabrics!
They also made some questionable choices.
I don't think that's a color I would have chosen.
By the end, their chaotic team dynamic cost them the win...
...and a team member.
Oh my goodness.
Nine players remain... who will win?
I'm Jonathan Scott, contractor and designer.
And I'm Drew Scott, real estate expert.
You know us as the "Property Brothers".
You are getting a lot of house for this place.
Whoa!
As identical twins, we're pretty competitive.
Anything he can do, I can do...only better.
Boom!
So welcome to the first "Brother vs. Brother" home renovation competition.
(man) Yes!
Throughout hardcore challenges, we'll coach teams of home improvement experts.
I don't think Drew is doing anything physical like this.
Wow!
the teams' work will be judged by some of the top real estate experts in the country.
I have to say...fabulous.
That's what I like to hear.
The last person standing will win $50,000.
(all) Wow!
And ultimately... may the best brother win.
You actually look nervous.

(Torche) Our plan in the master bedroom is to take down the whole wall
between both rooms and make it the master suite.
(Torche) We're gonna be laying new floor, and then we're gonna do a partial wall to create
two separate spaces in that large room.
(Torche) I'm thinking like an actual freestanding mini bar with a fridge--
then when it gets romantic...

(Torche) Hi, Jonathan!
You've had a little bit of time to talk things over.
I see you've sketched some stuff out.
(Torche) Yeah, we have, we've thought about it--so we were thinking of removing this wall.
I like your idea of having some sort of architecture in there.

a little bit of separation there,

Jonathan's great-- more and more, he teaches us stuff.
We've got some decisions made-- I think we need to get our hands dirty.
(all) Team Jonathan!
[pounding]
So, the start of our open concept.
(Mark) Sounds good, Jonathan.
We just finished tearing down that wall in the master suite.
So we're trying to decide on paint color.
We just need to make sure that we choose colors as a team, together.
(Inez) I like this, or that's even too purple...I like--
(Inez) I like these right here.
Should I puke now or later, you guys?
I'm sorry, we can't quite go with your advice on the color since last time...
Since last time what?

Right now, I have to face three people that they are saying,
"Ah, Francis is useless," just because I got the color wrong last time.
This does not represent me at all.
Pick something, and then we will all agree on it!
No, no, no...no!
Don't put it on me and make me select something I don't like!
I am very angry about it.
I am turning into a real Greek.
I decide I'm gonna go after the sunroom.
They definitely need some separation between
their fitness area and their seating area,
so I'm gonna put in a beautiful cork floor,
and I'm gonna stage a gym on the farther end.
I feel like this is gonna be a way for my to pull away from the team.
Torche and I have decided we're gonna tackle the sunroom together,
but I think she's kind of calling this room hers, which kind of pisses me off.

She doesn't have the experience in welding that I do-- she's more of an artist.
I own my own welding and fabrication business.
Until the very end, we are working as a team, and we need to remember that.
It's obvious that I need to start pulling up the slack.
In the master bedroom, I'm building this angled wall,

I'm an architectural consultant.
I have the design eye-- I can build with my bare hands.
[saw whirring]

I have never taken on a bathroom renovation...
much less in 48 hours-- I mean, this is insane.
[hammering]
But my personal strategy is to try to showcase
a little bit more of my design skills.
When I say I'm a landscape architect, people may underestimate me,
but I've got a lot of skills.
So my plan is to change floor tiles, put new tile on
the shower floor, and add a new double sink vanity.
I'm a perfectionist, so I really hope two days is enough time.
I see some patch work that needs to be done.
(Oliver) For the living room, I'm gonna paint that wood paneling
and do some space planning, modernize that space,
and put a little bit warmer color in there
so it's nice and clean, it's fresh, and it's updated.

Yep.
But just the fact that they did rush a little...
Honestly, we've seen enough of this house--I wanna show you a winning house,
so why don't we come over to my house and take a peek.
(Kennon) Okay, that's yet to be determined.
All right.
(Drew) Before, this front living space was washed out and felt very disorganized.
With new paint colors and furniture, the room feels brighter...
but does it add value?
Um...what's going on with the fireplace?
You don't like the green?
It's just, the very first thing when you walk in is you see that,
and that's a bad shade of green.
(Jonathan) Well, and the color palette all has to work together.
I can't tell if these walls are just dirty old walls.
Yeah, it's kinda muddy-- it doesn't...pop.
But wait 'til you see the kitchen--that's where we did a great job.
Wow, this looks really amazing.
(Drew) If you remember, this kitchen used to be all drab wood from floor to ceiling.
But now the cabinets have been re-painted, there are new countertops,
and I do love the glass mosaic.
And the color is accenting what we have on the walls.
This looks great--utilizing the same cabinetry but just painting it
and giving it a more modern feel--
this is a lot of added value here.
Moving into the eat-in area...
(Drew) Previously, the eat-in area felt dark and enclosed because of the dated wallpaper.
This is a lot lighter, which is nicer than what was in here before.
But this wallpaper... um, it just feels really uncomfortable to me.
(Jonathan) I'm kind of getting vertigo--
I feel like it's closing in on me.
There's bubbling here, these edges over here are horrible,
and that actually detracts from value.
Again, under a time constraint, Brett tried his best to finish this.
Thankfully, it's a pretty easy fix, so I'll get my guys in here
Yeah.
Why don't we head over into their living area?
(Drew) Before, the layout of this room made it feel much smaller than it really is,
so Oliver redesigned the space
and did some staging to open it up more.
There's amazing pieces of furniture here, but the dressing of the space
is really not making it a comfortable space in here,
and I wouldn't sit on that couch for a couple hours and watch that TV,
and I think for value, you know,
you wanna make sure that this space is understood.
Great.
(Kennon) Wow.
(Drew) If you'll remember, the master bathroom was in bad shape.
The floor tiles were chipping, and the shower was all grimy.
(Kennon) This looks amazing .
I like how they did change to a mosaic tile on the floor of the shower.
(Kennon) It does help with making it more modern.
I'm in love with this whole vanity and sink... this is really lovely.
This makes me a little nervous, because...very, very well done.
(Drew) I like to hear this.
Well, this is a lot of house-- for a two-day challenge,
I think we did pretty good.
You guys covered a lot of ground, and I'm really concerned
about value, so I'm gonna crunch a bunch of numbers, and I'll get back to you.
Great.
Good to see you...take care-- I'll see you later.
Forty-eight hours in this makeover-- I am very impressed,
but over there--I'm overjoyed with what my team has done.
I saw a sparkle in his eye when he talked about my place.
You made a bunch of mistakes.
I'm praying that we did enough to win this challenge.
(narrator) Here's a renovation comparison brought to you by autotrader.com.
On "Brother vs. Brother", there are many ways to increase property value.
Cork flooring can turn an activity room into a clean yet stylish space,
and new tile flooring can brighten and modernize a dated bathroom.
A side-by-side comparison shows how both can really increase the value of a home,
but which adds more to the bottom line?

Hey, guys--come on in, grab a seat.
Nervous, yeah.
Honestly, you guys have done an amazing job,
but it's up to our judge to make the final decision.
Hey, good to see you.
Now, you guys may recognize Kennon Earl.
He's from HGTV's "Selling LA".
He works this Los Angeles area, and he knows what value is
when it comes to improving a space.
Well, I've gotta tell you, I'm really impressed with
the magnitude of work that you did,
but when I walked in the front door, the first thing I saw right away was that fireplace.
(Kennon) I like green, but this green
just doesn't make sense to me.
You guys did a great job painting this room, but I also question the color.
It's a little muddy for me, like it just felt like
suddenly the walls were older than they were before.
Let's move on-- you didn't have to spend a lot of money in that kitchen.
I'm actually shaking a little bit,
because it was very risky for me to do the backsplash.
(Kennon) The color of the cabinets really makes it
crisp and clean, and I love that.
The backsplash looks beautiful, as well--I love the colors.
You added great value immediately there.
[sighs loudly] Thank God.
So let's talk about that dining area.
You guys had a great plan-- the wallpaper, color scheme
added a whole lot of symmetry to the whole entire project,
but there's a quality issue-- there's some little snags and rips and so forth...
And then the master bath
is fantastic.
The vanity and the double sink...
that added value just by getting two sinks in there,
and I really love what you did on the floor of the shower.
It looks fantastic.
I had a little bit of an awkward impression in the living room.
This room should pop initially, and it should make sense--
it made no sense.
I valued this property at $490,000
prior to anything being done.
With all of your changes, this house should now be valued at...
[laughs]
Honestly, guys, that is a really great job for only two days.
So that is a difference
of $25,000.
The question is, was it enough?
I really liked the solution you guys came up with.
The finishing work was lacking a little bit,
but the big stuff that you guys did was fantastic.
(Jonathan) Hey--I'd like to introduce you guys to Kennon Earl.
I really appreciate the fact that you guys selected two rooms,
and I think you did some great things, but you also made some mistakes.
In this outside room, the floor looks fantastic.
What I really liked was you really defined the space very clearly.
The master bedroom area was really...
funky before, you know,
those two rooms, they didn't make any sense,
and I think the decision to open that up-- that was really fantastic,
but that opening that was originally
supposed to be a fireplace...
really good money spent if you had been able to pull it off.
And these openings are not finished.
If I had a buyer, they would question
the quality of the rest of the house just on one little move like that.
I'll be honest, I'm a little nervous.
That focal point was basically mine.
So...before all of this was done, I had given an evaluation of this property
of $480,000.
Considering everything that you've done, the question is...
was that enough?
I'm praying that we did enough to win this challenge.
(Francis) We cannot afford to lose another team member.
[suspenseful music]
Before all of this was done,
I had given an evaluation of this property of $480,000.
So the new evaluation for the property is...
$510,000.
That's a difference of $30,000 that you created in just two days.
Was that enough?
[laughter]
Bring it in-- you guys bring it in.
Congratulations.
We won! Ahh, yes!
But in the back of my head,
I'm thinking about Team Drew.
This house should now be valued at...$515,000,
a difference of $25,000,
but was it enough?
No, it wasn't.
Jonathan's team was able to add $30,000 in value.
You guys were so close-- only $5,000 difference.
We lost--that means that somebody
is going home off of our team.
The tough thing for us is the fact that we bit off more than we can chew.
Now, David--you added a lot of value
to the master bathroom... you're safe.
Monica...Christy...
you guys are safe.
Overall, the kitchen did add the most value in this house.
The glass mosaic tile... stunning.
Oliver, I don't know if this was the right paint color.
It does feel a little bit boring,
and then with the space-planning side of things...
[whispering] Okay.
Yes.
The green was not the right choice in here.
And then the kitchenette-- the wallpaper was bubbled, it had rips,
and the stripes really enclosed that space.
But Brett...
you added more value in the areas that you worked than Oliver did.
So Oliver, I'm sorry to say... but you're going home.
I had a great time here, but thank you guys, you were a great team.
(Drew) Oliver, you're amazing at what you do--come here, give me a hug.
[whispering] Thanks.
Well, I'm really disappointed, but you know what?
This experience has been really awesome.
I don't think I'll be able to experience something, like, this crazy
or wonderful again.
It's never nice to send someone home,
so moving forward, I don't wanna see you spread too thin.
Get some rest, guys, because the next competition...
it's gonna be a tough one.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Mmhm--your team did a good job.
We've both lost a little now, and the game's getting a little tighter.
Yeah, I know-- maybe this time I get you the drink.
Sure--I need it, trust me.
Oh my God! It's so different!
(Shaun) Oh, it's beautiful.
Oh, shut up!
(Peter) It's awesome.
Oh, look at the counters, look at the backsplash!
I can't even hang a light fixture in the amount of time they did this.
[laughter]
Oh--oh my gosh, honey! I love it!
Look at this.
Next time...
We're doing things a little bit differently this time around.
One member will be cut from both teams.
It's becoming a lot more cutthroat.
I have to stand out.
My darling!
(Monica) We've hit a stumbling block.
No.
This is a huge problem.
