Dr. Chuck Downing: One thing I like to do in the classroom is to keep it interactive.
I don’t let the students believe that it’s an anonymous setting, even in the auditorium
here in Barsema Hall which holds almost 400 students. It’s still not anonymous. If somebody
is reading the paper, falling asleep or something I’m going to call them out. On the positive
side, I want them to feel that they are part of the experience.
Dr. Chang Liu: I really cannot think of no one better than him to deserve this Presidential
Teaching Professorship award. And when I read his teaching evaluations, without exception
semester after semester, year after year across his undergraduate and graduate level classes
his teaching evaluations are always the highest in the OM & IS department.
Travis Peirce: I can safely say that I have never had another professor who cared as much
about his class as Dr. Downing does. It’s seen with the preparation that he goes into.
The slides he provides us, the help. Whenever you have a question or need help with anything
you can go ask him. He’s welcoming at all times, he’s energetic.
Kyle Henry: Dr. Downing is able to relate everything he teaches to everyday life, and
certain topics that he teaches to everyday life very well. And his passion in teaching
in what he does, it really shows through. Jessica Ritchie: He really is a really good
mentor. He lets you do your own thing but is there for guidance if you need the extra
help or if you need to ask him just a quick question, even if you need to sit down for
a half hour and be like, “I don’t get this.” He’s really the one to be like,
okay well this is this. This is this, and this is this. He elaborates on everything
to make sure you have a full understanding of what he’s trying to teach in class.
Dr. Downing: There’s three main communities that I serve. Those being the business community,
the academic community, and the student community. In the academic community we’re charged
with conducting research. So then I take my research, which is of the advancement of the
original knowledge, my interaction with the business practitioners decision makers and
I combine those and bring those to the students. Then if I’ve done that correctly the students
will be the ultimate beneficiaries of my efforts. Yeaaaa! Come on!
