Anti sway straps hold down bikes during transport. Durable construction - Light weight and corrosion resistant injection moulded plastics. Folds flat for convenient storage. The Saris Bones 3 will carry three bikes safely on the majority of hatchbacks, estates, MPVs, saloons and convertibles, using three straps per side - top, bottom and middle - to hold the carrier stable and firm. It's very quick and easy to set up and to fold flat again when not in use. The anti-sway straps, a Saris exclusive, make a real difference, and holding the bikes at different heights should also help prevent important components from rubbing against each other. We think it's great. Features and specifications: The injection-moulded arms and legs ("bones") are made from a plastic resin and are said to be the strongest on the market. Most of the weight of the bikes is taken on the Bumper Legs and the rear bumper. The curve in the Rear Legs allows the Bones to be used on many saloons and convertibles where the boot spoiler would normally prevent a rack being used. The splined aluminium extrusion and the arm and leg joints are designed to absorb a useful amount of force, minimising the load on the straps. All three straps pass through the aluminium extrusion, helping to keep everything well-integrated and tidy, and each hook is marked as appropriate - Upper, Side, Lower. Details of this sort make a big difference to setting up speed. There are numbers on the arms and legs which, with practise, will help you set up the Bones to your ideal configuration without the hassle of trial or error. The hold-down and anti-sway straps have a softer plastic lining; generally all parts that come into contact with the vehicle and bikes are soft enough to prevent friction damage as long as both faces are clean before fitting, i.e. a dirty bumper might end up being scuffed, ditto a muddy bike tube. Note that the rear bike should be held higher than the others; this will reduce the strain on the carrier and help prevent friction damage. It's up to you to protect your bikes - most people don't seem to bother but others use e.g. bits of old carpet or closed-cell foam mat. See below for the Saris Protect-O-Pads. Bikes need to be properly balanced before being placed on the Arms; if they aren't they'll be trying to twist the Bones, and that's obviously not sensible. Please use "artificial cross bars" as required. We're including a 150cm strap, free of charge, for use as both a safety strap and to help hold everything tight; we've already pre-selected this for you. We do this for all rear carriers, tow ball and rear door mounted, including only one strap per carrier, even if you do succeed in abusing our online ordering system to order more! All Bones components are 100% recyclable, although with the Saris "lifetime warranty" this isn't such a consideration as it might be.
