Contrary to the popular belief
that Australia is the promised land for Maori,
there are many who struggle to live there
after welfare changes in 2001.
Toi Haka is a Melbourne-based Maori organisation
that helps Maori get into jobs, training, housing
and to stay connected to their identity.
Raiha Johns went to their fundraising event in South Yarra.
This is the first fundraising event for Toi Haka,
a Maori organisation that supports Maori
who are struggling in Melbourne.
Job hunting, job training, courses and finding homes;
there are a lot of things Toi Haka provides for Maori.
In addition, they also connect with the Aboriginal community.
That connection is also seen here.
Toi Maori funded the project.
Toi Maori also hopes to help musicians and artists
under Toi Haka who are hoping to grace the stages of Melbourne.
Toi Maori is also looking at that for next year.
At this point,
we're looking at five years
because this one was so good.
All the proceeds will go back into the Maori community.
What could be better than having a Maori organisation
meeting the needs of Maori in Melbourne?
