A Bay
is not just sand and sea.
Here's to you
the Morro bay
a natural reserve
located on the California coastline.
The sandy coasts are covered by a vegetation which is very similar
to the Mediterranean one.
It is home to the nests of a variety of birds species.
This Heermann Gull rambles on the shore.
Unlike other gulls,
such as the Silver Gulls, it is not very common.
Heermann Gulls
are very gregarious birds
they usually build their nests
in the bush, not far from the sea shore
where the "neighborhood" guarantees safety from predators
thanks to powerful noises.
So pretty and light when in the air, so clumsy when walking on the land,
the Brown Californian Pelicans
fly in flocks along the coast
where they hunt fish
by diving headfirst into the water.
With their powerful wings
they gently skim the water surface
in search of shoals of sardines
their ideal food, which,
being so abundant here
made them nest in these areas
such a peculiar place.
The colossus of Morro
symbol of this coast
has volcanic origin
and was once an island
it's 580 feet high
and has been declared
natural reserve recently
when it was discovered to be the nesting place of many birds
such as the pelicans.
Two nice Sea Otters play and glaze their hair
after eating delicious shellfish.
Otters open the shells using stones
that they keep in special skin pockets
so as to reuse them.
Unfortunately today
they are jeopardized,
due to the fishermen that ration their food.
The Oso Flaco Lake
south of Morro bay
is a marshy environment
a perfect ecosystem for American Coots
who find their preferred food
right here in the mud.
The waters are covered
by sweet water Duckweed
the lands are full of flowers, like the Onotera Elata.
Among the trees we can see a great Blue Heron
that's found in the U.S.only, but it's closely related
to the Italian Gray Heron.
The Osprey
is king of this swamp
it is a very big raptor
it is used to hunt with techniques similar to those of the pelican, it feeds on fish.
What would a bay be without all this?
Just sea and beaches
and we need to protect what surrounds us
this world
OUR WORLD !
