This is a can of peas.
This can contains 200gr of peas.
Every year
tons of perfectly good food
are wasted and lost at later stages in the supply chain
and due to lack of coordination
between producers and distributers.
This amounts to 40 million tons only in the US
and nearly 40 billion globally.
That's a lot of peas.
5.48 million people die of hunger each year.
So it's not that there's not enough food
it's that it's poorly distributed.
That's why we need food banks
and food banking networks
to take this surplus from manufactures and farmers
as well as private donations
and redistribute it throughout the world
to the places and people who need it the most.
Food loss and waste
also amount to a mayor squandering
of resources including
water, land, energy, labor and capital.
And needlessly produce green house gas emitions
contributing to global warming
and climate change.
Every year
consumers in rich countries
waste as much food
as the entire net food production
for sub-Saharan Africa.
A can of peas can't change the world
but you can.
