[Text on screen] Tell me about the Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program at Purdue University Calumet
[Text on screen] Padmalochini Umakanthan Current Graduate Student
[Text on Screen] Why did you choose to attend Purdue Calumet? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) Purdue Calumet is an important institution and
my main thing was I wanted to work on technical processing feed.
So when I was trying to apply for university for my country
I was in touch with a lot of professors and
I could barely find, like, good advisors who could help
in my thesis and my work. So that's why I'm here.
[Text on Screen] What do you like about Purdue Calumet? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) To begin with, the faculty. All the classes are only like
not huge. You don't get lost. It's small in number and you get to interact with your teachers more often
Whatever be the doubt, even if it is like small in doubt, you can just go knock on their door.
They are available for you all the time.
And I was also a TA. I've been TA for like 4 semesters now and
it's a really great experience. Like when you teach you learn more, right.
So that also providing experience. Apart from, like, it helps me with my tuition fees but it also it
helps me learn a lot of things being the TA. And...
a lot of clubs that you can get involved with so if you feel like your not bored or stuff you can
always be active in the one group or the other and a lot of
tools and trips are organized by various organizations, Student Activities and International Student Affairs.
So all those are like good experiences. You can get to meet other people.
You can go see places. Being new to this country, they take you out.
So it's like, very good.
[Text on Screen] What advantages do you see on campus? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) On campus, it's multiculturally enrollment and
you have a lot of resources that will help you in what you want to do.
Like for instance, I got assistantship opportunitites
which helped me with my tuition fees and everything.
The Student Activities and International Student Affairs, all of them right from the first day,
like from picking me up from the airport. They were, like, really helpful in making things good for me
and on campus jobs. Of course students and everybody.
It's good feeling to be, you know doing my, I'm happy that I am completing my master's
from this institution.
The graduate school, it does a lot of grants...research grants it
gives out not many to the professors but to the students. So it helps
me in attending free conferences...international conferences and pressing my
work there. So it was really helpful. I could take my work
to a bigger audience and get feedback from all of them. So yeah, that was great.
[Text on Screen] How are the campus facilities? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) The labs or the lab facilities are, they're all like, all state of the art facilities that are available. You can
whatever tools you want to use. You can approach or contact people and they get it out for you.
The library, you get a good range of books and even you have some books
missing, this library can request them and they get it to you from some other libraries
and stuff and so it's really helpful.
[Text on Screen] How did Career Services assist with your job search? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) The Career Services and the Career Services of West Lafayette, they
organize job fairs twice a year and nearly like a hundred companies visit them.
It's an excellent opportunity to meet with a lot of companies. Like nearly a hundred companies
turn up for these job fairs and I went to one of those in fall and I was able to get an
internship opportunity at Intel. So I was like co-oping there for like 7 yea...7 months
and subsequently I also got a full-time offer from them.
So I'm really thankful for Purdue Calumet for making me go get that opportunity.
[Text on Screen] Advice to future students... (Padmalochini Umakanthan) They must be open to work hard
and I think it's easier. And so you should...you should be aware of the opportunities available. You should
just look hard for everything. If your not going to look hard for opportunites
you are not going to get them.
So just be open. Just talk to many people. Talk with all your advisors,
the other faculty. People that are, you know, in these organizations.
They open a lot of doors for you. So just keep knocking.
[Text on Screen] Would you recommend Purdue Calumet to your friends? (Padmalochini Umakanthan) Definitely, given the opportunities that you get here, it's a very good place
to get a degree from.
