We do this to ask you please,
We dont want to be put in that situation
If you do anything, if you do drink. Please don't drive.
Call a friend, call a family member. They won't be judgmental at that time, they'll just be happy.
They'll be happy that you called about it.
When we go through the program it is kind of graphic.
We intend for that.
We want to try to drive this point home, this is not what we want.
Thank you.
Morning Guys
Hey listen, I need your undivided attention. This morning a lot of people as you can see are involved putting on this program fo
They worked very hard and long hours to put on a good show.
What you're see'n is a reenactment this morning, but this stuff happens every day.
I've seen it, I've been on the road, I've been to these calls. and let me tell you, they're the most gut wrenching
feeling you'll ever have, helpless feeling you'll ever have in your life.
I've seen a family member upset because their child made a mistake of getting in a car after they've been drinking, or getting in a car after their friends have been drinking.
This stuff guys, you can't take back.
Once it happens, it happens. You can't take it back.
You're paralyzed, you're dead in the ground. That stuff don't heal itself. It's permanent and forever, and you guys are way to y
to be making an incredibly stupid mistake of [drinking] and getting behind the wheel.
So again, we're going to put on a good show for ya, and we're going to get started. Thank you.
I just think you should let me dive
I mean you're going really fast Ivan. And your'e really starting to scare me.
No way, I'll get us both home okay.
If you're so worried why dont you wear your seatbelt
We're almost home and I don't want to wrinkle my dress
They're so annoying and i feel like they're choking me
Besides, they don't work anyway
Oh MY GOD IVAN LOOK OUT, AHHH
There's been a horrible accident.
I'm by the Walmart on 54
Please Hurry
There's two vehicles, there's a lot of damage. Hurry please.
Is anybody injured, is anybody trapped?
Me any my girlfriend were just driving, there's someone trapped and a girl hanging out the window.
Hurry up.
There's help on the way.
I don't know how many people,
Okay
Alright.
Jasmine, I'm trying to get a hold you
Where are you?
Please, please call me back
We're so worried about you.
Why would you do that
Wake up.
Oh My God.
Jasmine.
What the hell were you thinking?
Why would you do that?
You're an idiot!
You're an idiot!
Why would you kill your girlfriend?
You're so stupid!
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
Someone help us please.
Help!
Don't touch her!
Open the door.
Please open the door!
Oh my God, please.
Go Away!
What's your problem?
Go Away!
Somebody Help Us!
The first to arrive and crews are checking patients, seeing to see what they need to do. Seeing if they're able to free them.
To prevent further [damage], the Fire Rescue Crew is cutting the vehicle away from the patient.
At this time the girl lying on the hood of the truck was confirmed that she's dead.
For the the two patients in the van, they have been called a helicopter.
They need to get in surgery right away.
Come walk over here where the ground is level. Can you walk?
Have you ever been right your rights before?
Alright, I'm gonna read them to you.
(Reads Miranda Rights)
Do you understand your rights?
Yes or no?
Im gonna do some field sobriety exercises okay.
One leg stand
You're gonna stand with your heels together, and your arms at your side.
Do not begin your test until I tell you to do so. Do you understand?
Raise one leg, either leg, approximately 6 inches off the ground with your foot pointed out. Keep both legs free and keep your eyes on the elevated foot.
While holding that position count out loud, 1000,1001,1002,1003, until I tell you to stop.
Do you understand your instructions?
You may begin the exercise.
Alright, ready for the next exercise?
Next one is the walk and turn.
You're gonna put your left foot on the line and put your right foot in front of it, with your heel touching your toe.
Keep your hands at your side
Turn around sir, okay.
Put your hand behind your back.
You're under arrest for DUI, okay.
O God.
You were supposed to stay together, what happend!
My baby girl.
What happend?
She's by herself.
Is that her?
We need you to make sure that's Jasmine.
NO!
At this time all the patients have been removed from the vehicle.
There is just the placing the body in the body bag.
The other patient...
They no longer have a pulse.
...what happened there dad...
...did I live?
I don't want to se you see you crying for me... there are other that are dead.
I know you've been good to me dad.
Other than he's drunk dad, and now I'm the one that now has to pay.
How could this happen to me dad.
There's blood all over me dad, and most of it's mine
I just wanted to tell you dad.
There's others dad.
Tell my brothers not to cry dad.
Tell them to be brave.
And when I go to heaven dad.
...On my grave
Someone should have told me dad. Not to drink and drive
Only if they told me dad.
I would still be alive.
Please don't cry for me dad.
I wasn't supposed to die.
But why am I the one to die.
This scenario you've just witnessed
Happens on a daily basis
They don't have the proficiency of this
Because we're training every day, unfortunately.
This is one of our training opportunities.
But they did this two times yesterday, two different crews.
Right now i'm gonna introduce you Dr. Norman
He'd like to say a few words.
This very realistic presentation, for all you guys you did a really good job
But, I can tell you it's nothing like the real thing.
My job is to take care of you if you're lucky enough to live through something like this.
and get to the hospital.
The easy part is taking care of the patient. The hard part is going outside.
Telling your mother and dad... that you're dead, or you're paralyzed.
That's the hard part.
The other... is training, and that just kicks in. But you never get used to family members
And telling them.
Your child is dead.
What happens when you get to the Trauma Center
Is that, first you're gonna be stripped naked.
The'll be a number of tubes being put into your various orifices.
You'll be put on a ventilator, you'll be paralyzed.
Just so that we can take care of you faster.
Then you'll go through a number of tests
Then, you'll probably end up in the operating room.
You'll have a big incision from the top of your neck to the lower part of your abdomen.
Ad then you'll be, if you're lucky enough to survive all that, then you'll probably be in the ICU for 6-8 weeks.
on a ventilator.
If you're paralyzed, then you're gonna end up in rehab for another 3 months.
So, I guess what i'm trying to say is that, you know,
is it really worth that, you know, to get high/drunk on the night of your prom?
Probably not.
Again, you know everybody that wants to have a good time, and you can have a good time.
If you're gonna drink just don't get into the car.
Please don't do that. That puts your family through this situation. It's just not worth it.
So, if any of you guys wanna can come by the Trauma Center anytime, and we'll be glad to show you around.
Take you up to the ICU, and walk you through there.
And see what it's really like.
The door's open
I hope you guys have a good prom, have a good time, but please make the right decisions and please be careful out there.
Thank you.
Good morning guys.
Everybody said here today, don't drink and drive, don't drink and drive, don't drink and drive.
And with the words being burned into your head.
But I want you to look at your friends to the left and right of you guys.
Because somebody's gonna make that choice and it could be you right there.
Gonna make that choice, and when you make that choice, you're putting a lot into your hands.
The choice of getting in a wreck, killing somebody, killing yourself.
Getting a DUI, and at your age, it's a no-tolerance DUI.
There's no gray area. You get a DUI your age your license is done for a while.
But, we've been out here, we've done this for about 10 years now.
And without the assistance of the sheriff's office, FHP, Dobies Funeral Home,
Bayflight, the student drama club, Bayonet Hospital. this program won't go on.
And I know to some of you, it was a little free period to get out of class.
But when you come to school after prom and your best friend was killed because he made a stupid decision.
Then maybe it'll sink in a little bit more.
So what were gonna do now is were gonna open up the grounds to you guys.
Have you come out you look at the firetruck, the rescue unit, Bayflight's helicopter, the car crash.
But one of the best things I want you to do is to do is give these young kids right here a nice clap.
They did very well.
