Hi, I'm Scott. Students often complain that in the writing test
they can't come up with ideas when they're presented with topics
in Task 2. Topics in the writing test will be
'real world' or 'popular' topics and these topics are
often mentioned and featured in the news.
An IELTS candidate therefore, must
daily, keep up with the news in English.
There are multiple benefits in keeping up with the news.
The first one - and most obviously -
is that you equip yourself with the knowledge
about common IELTS topics - topics that
you may be asked to write about on the day of the test.
Secondly, you develop your ability to read...
you build your vocabulary
and improve your reading including your reading speed.
Thirdly, you on becomes
trained to understand such things as vocabulary -
when the correct word is used - you also
learn about punctuation, punctuation marks,
paragraphing...in other words, the correct
way to write. On the screen in front of you
are some highly recommended news sites to visit
and I recommend that you spend thirty-minutes
to an hour per day, on this
very worthwhile activity. I strongly encourage you
to improve your knowledge and your knowledge base
by daily keeping up with the news. Doing this
will really help you improve
your writing ability for writing Task 2.
