Hi Sam Davis here from the law firm of Davis, Saperstein and Salomon
for another Metal on Metal Minute.
This week,
more bad news for the metal on metal franchises
this time
from across the puddle in Britain
Smith and Nephew announced the recall
it's entire R3 acetabular cup system
The acetabular cup, as you will recall, is that circular peace of metal
that fits into
the acetabulum (the hip)
in which
the ball
and stem fit.
It's usually done to replace arthritic hips.
But this metal on metal hip shared something very much in common with the DePuy hip,
and that is it had very high failure rates. This acetabular cup has been
associated with a 60% higher failure rate than
the British regulatory institutions found acceptable.
There were fractures,
dislocations, and of course as with all metal on metal
components
metallosis, infection,
high levels of cobalt & chrome,
which may be a big problem in the future.
I want to thank you for joining us for this Metal on Metal Minute.
My name is Sam Davis, if there is any question I can answer for you about
your knee or hip implant,
feel free to contact me at 1-800-LAW-2000, that's 1-800-529-2000
Hope to see you again on another Metal on Metal Minute.
