Welcome to the Queensland Globe Tutorial Series.
In this first video, we’re going to explore getting started with Google Earth and accessing the QLD Globe.
For compatibility, make sure you are using the latest version of a recommended internet browser.
For this demonstration we’ll be using Internet Explorer.
Now, if you haven’t done so already, navigate to google and download and install the latest free version of the google earth application.
From here you can simply follow the onscreen instructions, and any installation prompts.
In this situation you may want to uncheck installing google chrome if you do not require it, then click on “agree and download”.
If your download does not start automatically you must click the hyperlink THEN run the downloaded google earth file.
This process may be different in other browsers but just follow the installation instructions.
From here it will begin installing and you will soon be operating inside google earth 3D.
Also note, if you already have Google Earth™, check in “Help” / “About Google Earth”
and make sure that you have the latest version of the application.
Google earth is a powerful visualisation tool, so to get the most from it,
there are a couple of settings that can be adjusted to make things easier.
Try these changes and decide for yourself.
The first of these is “Elevation Exaggeration” :
To do this, in the menu bar go to Tools>Options> and under the 3D View Tab Set this value to 2 and click apply.
This will create a more impressive representation of mountains and land feature.
Additionally, you can Turn off Automatic Tilting :
To do this, go to the Navigation Tab and check “Do not automatically tilt while zooming” and click apply.
For the first time use you need to download a small Queensland Globe key file.
The link to the file can be found on the DNRM website. We will be using the following link for this tutorials demonstration.
Click on “install Queensland Globe for Mac or PC”
And Download the qldglobe.kml file by right clicking on the link and selecting 'Save target as...' or 'Save link as...'
Choose a location such as your desktop (however this may normally default to your 'Downloads' folder).
The downloaded KML file is your key to Queensland Globe - Go to the file location and double click on the file.
The file will open Google Earth™ and automatically load the QLD Globe data.
Queensland Globe contains a wealth of data which is accessed through a number of individual globes.
Each globe contains a number of data rich layers that can be displayed in combination.
On first entering the QLD Globe you will be shown a window with important information.
Here you will also have links to other more specific globes. Simply click a link to add any additional globes to your current session.
For each globe selected an entry will be added in the “Layers” pane in the bottom left corner of the Google Earth Window.
These can be expanded to show the data.
Close the window to start using the data. You can re-access this window by clicking on the Queensland Globe Information link in the menu.
Well Done, you’re in! Now you will notice that all data is ready to access within the layers pane.
