Where I Live Zem Joaquin
I'm Zem Joaquin
I am editor in chief and founder of ecofabulous.com, a website devoted to
style and sustainability. I'm also the eco-living editor for domino magazine. I am completely
obsessed with design but I am also really devoted to the environment,
so when I designed this house I kept that in
mind every single aspect, but I never compromised my personal style.
I had a house that I wanted to make hollywood glam meets
palm springs chic.
But, I wanted to keep it green.
An entry way really should be
the invitation to come into the rest the house and should set the stage
for what the house is gonna feel like,
and I wanted to create this indoor outdoor quality to the house,
And it really just sets the stage for glamour,
This is the family room and it truly is
the family room, the entire family spends
I'd say ninety percent of our time here.
You know sitting on the couch, reading books, watching TV
telling stories
so we needed a big couch that was inviting
warm and comfortable
and it's out of FSC certified wood filled with natural tapped rubber.
The fabric is coated
in a non-toxic repellent so that the kids can spill on it. The other thing that we
did was we found this really cool rug that's made out of the remnants from the leather
purse industry.
So you know I'm using something that otherwise would have gone into landfill.
The living room couch
really is the piece that is gourgeous
glamorous
very much regency inspired but
is totally environmentally conscious.
The dining room had to feel
really formal,
and sophisticated but I also wanted it to be a space that was inviting and exciting to sit in.
We have the vintage Lazlo table
and those beautiful vintage chairs that match it that we then re-covered with natural
tapped rubber and eco-fabric.
The whole house I had done with this very white crisp palette,
and had found it a little more challenging to find
low VOC paints with a lot of color but then I found this incredible benjamin moore,
bright blue that just made that wall pop so beautifully for the artwork that's on it.
I really wanted my kids' rooms to be fun and inviting and exciting for them and for their friends
but of course they still had to be environmentally conscious.
With my bedroom
I wanted to go with kind of a romantic
glistening cocoon feel.
We used
this really beautiful natural mineral as the wall coverings and natural-tapped rubber bed
which makes for an incredibly comfortable sleep
An we have the the organic pottery barn sheets which I just love. I searched and searched and found a vintage
partsinger piece which fit
absolute perfectly on the wall and it creates
again that feeling of
hollywood glam
regency inspired
design. Your
personal aesthetic shouldn't be compromised because you want to do it in an environmentally
friendly manner.
I think you could do a traditional home
or you could do a modern home and apply
environmental ideals
without compromising your aesthetic.
