A campaign to shut commercial paua harvesting
out of Otago and Southland has won favour
with Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.
The grass-roots movement led by high profile figures
like former All Black Kees Meeuws argues that areas near Bluff,
Waipapa Point, the Clutha Mouth
and part of Otago should remain free of commercial fishers.
He says this decision would be of importance to New Zealanders
who enjoy diving, fishing and hunting
to put food on their families' tables.
If it was opened up to commercial gatherers,
it would be quickly fished out.
