I think the biggest problem with nutrition is that people think they know enough about it.
Everyone knows enough about nutrition to be able to lose some weight. Everyone knows
that if you eat less, and exercise more, you're going to lose weight.
But if that was actually the reality of it, then we wouldn't have a weight problem in the first place.
Because it's not about knowledge, it's not about KNOWING that, it's about knowing
actually how to put it in practise.
And I think that that's what RNC and Olivia actually does. Because they put the food plan
together for you, it's different from "I need to eat less and exercise more" - they're actually
setting you up so that at the end of the day you're not hungry, and you've got all of the
right foods on board, AND you're losing weight at the same time.
I started with them about four or five years ago. So when I went there, I was 86 kilos.
For me, that was a sort of rock-bottom kind of weight, and I know it's different
for everybody - they have clients there who are 130-140 kilos plus, but they also have
people there who are athletes, and their weight isn't their issue, but they need to be able
to feed their bodies for the type of exercise they're doing. So it's a whole range.
And they have body builders and everyone in between. So it's for a whole range of different people.
So I went there originally to lose some weight. I'd done Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, SureSlim,
Atkins, Lemon Detox (that's the worst one of all!) every single diet known to mankind!
And they all tell you that it's a "lifestyle change" and that this is not a diet, this
is something that you're doing for the rest of your life. But when they provide you with
your meals in a cardboard box, or you're drinking some ridiculous potion for a week,
that's not a lifestyle change - that IS actually a diet.
So I think that what I learnt at RNC is that you have to lose the weight in the same way
that you're going to keep the weight off. So by doing that, you are actually changing
your habits along the way. And it's not "I'm doing this for this magic number of weeks
and I'm going to lose X amount of kilos" and then I'm going to go back to my normal lifestyle.
It's not like that. It's a different mindset. It actually teaches you how to eat normally,
all of the time.
So you're just eating nice healthy food and you're losing the weight, and you're seeing
the results. And then when you hit your goal weight, it's exactly the same. You get some
extra calories and some extra bits and pieces added in, because now you're trying to maintain
your weight - but you're not actually trying to stick to some ridiculous thing that you
can only do for a certain period of time.
And there's room for things like celebrations and birthdays, and the odd glass of wine,
and the odd little piece of cake - and they teach you how to put those things into your
lifestyle, so it's not like you have to eat lettuce for the rest of your life - you're
just eating normal food. For me, it took me maybe about six months - I got down to about
64 kilos, I lost 22 kilos all up. And that completely changed my life.
