>>APRIL FONG: So today, the Habitat Team is working in Sylvania Natural Area Park.
We are divided into four different groups.
One group is working in the creek removing invasive species.
There's two groups divided into previously planted areas,
and we are weeding those native plants to help encourage them to grow better.
And then we also have a team that is working to remove garbage and flagging,
because we had flagging from previous work where we had tagged invasive species
and those are no longer there but maybe some limbs and flagging
are still there so we're removing that. [Laughter]
And tap dancing! [Laughter]
[Music]
>>STUDENT 1: We are clearing about a foot to two-foot radius around the plantings,
taking away weeds and grass and other non-native species
so that the nutrients can go into the soil and that they're not starved out
by grass or other weeds.
>>STUDENT 2: I'm here, helping out to clean up the park over by PCC,
doing this for extra credit but also just for the fun of it.
I get to go around the forest and pick up little bits of trash that we find.
It's quite fun. I found a sheet of metal. [Laughter].
>>STUDENT 3: This group's killing some wisteria.
We've got some terrible things about 60 feet up into that tree,
coming down from that tree onto this tree and into the ground.
So, we've got some herbicide. Find a root and throw it on there.
>>WORK ADVISOR: If you're cutting weeds or brush,
like these little twigs that have blown down
I actually like to leave these 'cause I feel that they're kind of oatmeal for the soil.
But I give them a little extra cut here and there so they decompose quicker.
