Good morning. Dazzlers Acrylic Nails and Beauty. Elena speaking.
Yep, sure. I’ll just go check with Jalissa.
It’s great to be asked for by name in my profession.
Am I hurting you? No.
When you are a nail technician, your client base is everything.
Especially this bit.
Before a client arrives at the salon, I need to check that I
have all the products and that everything is clean and tidy.
Would you like to soak your hands now?
Thank you, Jalissa.
I do up to eight manicures a day.
The days can get pretty busy and our hands get quite sore.
Acrylic nails.
Buff. Shape.
So we have to take a few breaks in between.
It’s not all about hands. I also do a lot of pedicures.
Sometimes people’s feet don’t smell too good but once
I’ve exfoliated and scrubbed their feet, it’s all good.
Believe it or not, this is my favourite part of the job.
Is that painful? No.
To become a nail technician, I studied at TAFE and
completed a Certificate II in Nail Technician.
It was quite surprising how much theory there was.
The course was quite intense.
We did three hours practical a week. Mostly we trained on each other.
last three weeks we brought in our own models.
That’s a stunning red on you.
I actually wanted to be a make-up artist.
I might eventually move into that
but for the moment, I really love what I’m doing.
I like the fact that every client has a story to tell.
Is this tickling?
Sometimes we are with our clients for up to an hour.
It’s nice to share experiences, good or bad.
Keeping up with technology and trends is a must.
The idea is to have less on your brush ...
Elena is a nationally accredited beauty therapist.
It just gets gluggy and ...
She’s doing nail art today. I might sit in and watch.
Now you’ve got to stick the diamantes on when the nail polish is wet.
It’s always good to pick up tips.
The easiest way to get the diamantes is to use an orangewood stick
and just wet the tip so you can pick up the diamante with it.
To be a good nail technician, you have to be a people person.
Thank you very much, Jalissa. That’s beautiful.
It’s always good to have a bit of a chat so the client feels comfortable.
The pay is quite good, once you’ve built a solid client base. No client – no pay.
At the moment, I’m only doing three days a week.
But once I get more clients, I’ll work up to five days a week.
Working a Saturday or late night trading goes with the territory
so you have to be prepared to be a little bit flexible.
It’s always good to do extra study
so you know how to work in different areas of the salon.
There are a few duties I have to do before I go home.
Sue, do you mind if I take this home and try it? No, not at all, Jalissa.
The big perk of the job is trying out all the latest products.
Why don’t you also try the body smoother as well?
It’s tough but somebody’s got to do it. Next hand ...
Working here at Dazzlers has taught me great time
management and I’m much more confident these days.
I’m only young so I still have a lot to learn but
that doesn’t matter because I want to learn it all.
