Jennifer: Jennifer here with the Rainbow Academy Early Learning Centers with some tips on successful
infant tummy time. Do you ever get the feeling that your baby doesn’t enjoy tummy time?
Does he or she cry when you place them in a tummy time position? Here are some possible
reasons and hopefully some successful tips for you to use.
In thinking about tummy time, keep in mind that an infant’s vision is still developing,
along with all the neck muscles that allow them to lift their head and move it from side
to side. Therefore, when a baby is on the floor in a tummy time position, they hear
all sorts of sounds around them but cannot lift their head to see where the sounds are
coming from. This could make for an intimidating and scary tummy time. Keeping in mind vision
and neck muscles, when an infant is placed on the floor, the area of space that they
can see is extremely limited. If there’s no stimulation there, that is sure to guarantee
a boring tummy time.
Here are some tips that you can use at home with your baby for hopeful success. First,
place the infant on some means of support so that they’re not faced directly with
the floor or the mat at their eye.
Second, lay beside them, either in the front, next to them. Keep it simple. You can sing
to them. You can call their name. You can massage their arms and hands or even just
tap their fingers. Having a familiar face, a reassuring voice and just that touch of
physical bond will let them feel that they are in a secure and trusting environment.
Lastly, include an age-appropriate toy. You can shake it. You can roll it back and forth.
Eventually, they might start to grab for it. You can also see if their eyes are able to
follow the object.
All the skills that are required at tummy time are extremely important to your child’s
future development. Large motor skills, small motor skills, cognitive and sensory skills
are all key elements to future development like crawling, walking and even learning.
We hope that these tips helped and that you enjoy your tummy time at home with your baby.
