July - August 2011 Amazonia - Transamazonica highway
Here we are at 4600m of altitude, it's the last time we are so high
Ahead is 70km downhill to a tropical climate, it's going to be just great !
At the entrance of the Amazonian forest. It's rather hilly but in 150km it should be flat
The Amazonian region is well known for its heavy rains. We chose to cross it during the dry season, in July/August.
Here is the result : we cannot avoid the rain in this region...
Aftera small rain, a nice litlle break !
Ants vs. our tent... It's the morning, there are holes everywhere and thousands of bugs flying all around it, it's horrible...
We came from here, and we are going... there !
- Morgan, what was your fun moment today ? - Here is how I enjoy my day...
We're just starting the transmazonian highway, and we have a problem with the hub on Siphay's bike
An efficient way to have a bath : just put your soap in your pocket and...
150km after the village of Humaita where we've been kindly hosted in an Indian village.
The people here speaks an unknown language, we are really lucky to be here. They lend this roof to sleep.
And right now we are having forced rest because Siphay broke his rim.
So we wait for him and will leave for much tougher rides tomorrow.
- Hey guys, I got the rim ! [Siphay is back from Humaita, 400km away, hitchhiking...]
- I had to do it on the ladder of a truck, so now I am full of dust from the road...
Here we go... not so enjoyable. At least I worked on my tan !
It's soon 4PM, we had to repair the rear wheel's hub but it broke again...
We found a truck to take us to the next village, Apui. So we save 130km and there we will repair things and leave towards the Santarém city.
We are just setting our camp, and an equatorial storm is coming right over our heads
It's not easy, we are all wet, Brian over there is fighting to set up his hammock !
And we are also cooking with the stove at the same time.
It's the most horrible road I've ever known !
Seriously, if anyone dares to say Amazonia is flat, he should come here have a look !
It's actually super hilly... And we always have problems so we are forced to walk and push our bikes...
You can't see but I try to put sugar in my bottle on my bike...
It's... really not easy...
We've just ridden 90km today and we are empty of energy, we can hardly go on right now...because of this terrible heat.
We have to keep going anyway...
On August 29th we reach the end of the jungle, after 2500km of dirt track in 40 days.
