There are many ways
research is conducted around the world. You may even have conducted research
at your previous university or in a previous job.
This video is meant to give you
an introduction to research in the United States
and what kind of research you can expect to do here
at Kansas State University. The Merriam-Webster dictionary
defines research as careful
or diligent search or studious
inquiry for examination. Research can also be
a collection of information about a subject. Whether you are a first year
undergraduate student
or PhD candidate, you will probably conduct some kind of research
while you're here at K-State. Here are some examples of
research you might do while you're a student at K-State.
You might write a research paper.
You might conduct a review of the literature
in a given field. You might
give a research-based presentation. You might create
an annotated bibliography, that is an
annotated summary of the research that has been done
and getting field, or you might conduct original research or investigation
under the supervision of a professor. In any case,
you will likely follow a research process or
steps that researchers take to make conclusions.
Here are the basic steps but the research process.
First, choose your topic.
In some cases, you will get to choose your own topic.
In other cases, your instructor will choose one for you.
Second, find existing research.
Examine what research has already been done on your topic.
Third, evaluates sources.
Review the existing research
and determine which work best supports or contrasts
your ideas. Fourth, organize your information.
Before making any conclusions,
it is helpful to organize your materials and thoughts.
Fifth, draft your paper.
In this step, you draft your paper,
your presentation or other conclusions. Then finally, in the sixth
step, you review, you refine,
and you revise your paper presentation before turning it in
for grading or publishing. In the United States,
it is important that your research builds upon research
that others have done in the past. When you write your paper or presentation,
make sure you sure you show all other research that has informed your opinion.
Libraries in the United States are dedicated to helping you conduct
research. In addition to housing
many millions of books, articles, and other research materials,
Kansas State University Libraries employs many librarians to help you find,
evaluate, and use research. If you have any questions about the research process,
or how to find the right research for your paper,
please don't hesitate to ask a librarian.
