>> President Hart Hello.
I am delighted to welcome you back for the reopening of classes at Temple University,
Japan campus.
This is indeed a wonderful day!
I know that these past few weeks have been extraordinarily challenging. I want to make
sure you know that the worldwide Temple University community continues to support each one of
you as activities resume on campus in Tokyo.
And we stand with all of our colleagues and friends in Japan and are committed to stand
with you as the Japanese people recover from the national crisis caused by the earthquakes
and tsunami last month.
We will, first and foremost, continue to assist our students, faculty and staff of TUJ and
all of our community members with ties to Japan.
And we assure all of our Japanese partners that TUJ will continue to be the pinnacle
expression of Temple's global commitment for generations to come.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank Dean Stronach and everyone at TUJ for their
actions in responding to the immediate aftermath of the earthquake to help students and to
keep everyone informed as events unfolded in Tokyo.
We also had a remarkable team working here in Philadelphia, including the staffs of the
Offices of International Affairs, Education Abroad and Overseas Campuses, Student Affairs
and many others. I am deeply grateful to everyone for their outstanding efforts.
Lastly, I want to thank you.
You may not be aware that news outlets throughout the United States and the world reported on
the calm and purposeful response of TUJ students, faculty and staff following the earthquake.
I was so proud of each one of you as Temple's deep roots in Japan were reflected in your
commitment to continue our educational programs at TUJ.
There is no greater expression of those deep roots than the reopening of classes today.
I look forward to returning to TUJ in June for the graduation ceremonies.
I hope I will have an opportunity to see you then and to celebrate the tremendous achievements
of this most remarkable year.
Until then, please know that we are with you, we are proud of you, and we are delighted
to have you back on campus!
Thank you. ###
