i wanna compare and contrast for you
uh... by pulling some data from an article on texter
in american life there seem to be two sets of rules in a sense and we've
talked about this on the show it in in the number of different ways the list
on the one hand is the kind of set of rules and laws that apply to just kind
of average people
and then there's another set of laws which applied to
uh... our legislators people who are because of financial or other reasons
able to have uh... uh... advantages a resource is that the kind of average
person isn't able to have
and we actually have a really great example of this right now which is
in the last couple of couple of months really
there've been a number of young people who for sarcastic or otherwise
relatively benign comments have been arrested and jailed for a lot
one example is cameron gambar osha ok we talked about him who in the wake of the
bear a boston marathon bombing
he had some rap lyrics that that were uh... considered by authorities to be
terroristic threats
he spent two months in jail
without bail
for what was described as a terroristic threat eventually charges were dropped
another example is justin carter and a lot of people have been emailing me
about justin carter explaining how he made a sarcastic comment while playing a
multi player video game he said
uh... after someone told them he was crazy he said over yet unreal messed up
in the head i'm gonna shoot up a school for kids and if they're still beating
hearts
the next few lines were aloe well and just kidding
he was arrested march twenty seventh
he is still in jail
take those two cases and hold them in your mind for a second
now thoughts think about that police officer the washington d d_c_ police
officer
christopher pitching honor
seventeen-year veteran he was a member of the elite presidential motorcade
detail not something that ricky police officers are typically able to be a part
of a law it is reserved for
uh... for the elite right
he is going to be suspended without pay
for about one month
after making a joke
about killing the first lady
michelle obama
threatening to go on a shooting spree
and calling president obama a communist
no terroristic threats charges no jail time no solitary confinement no being
held without bail
he's a cop
he lives and works in washington d_c_
he works in close proximity to the president and he has access to firearms
none of those things
these other two individuals
don't even own weapons
their little kids they have no training with weapons are committing violence
whatsoever
they're held for significant periods of time do we now have a significant double
standard here goes
no doubt
uh...
art i think it's its
pretty amazing that people just assume because you're a member of law
enforcement you're mentally sound
and that year somehow incapable of of doing something that you joke about we
know that's not the case
and we've
covered countless stories
uh... better their contrary to that so i i think clearly this double standard and
clearly there's a problem you have to hold people accountable
in the same way you all
regular citizens accountable i mean borough equal rights also have you
noticed how many times now describes her threats are labeled as terrorists
and as we know when something is labeled terrorist or potentially terrorist
who don't have the same legal protections as as the accused that you
would if you are not labeled terrorist and that is again just part of the
leeway in and and uh... uh... but that bid the leeway i guess full stop
that is being provided uh... to law enforcement and government officials
that a lot of people have problems with similar thoughts is there a double
standard are there to legal systems
are there to economic systems let us know
