ARDEN MYRIN: What's up, Spaces?
It's Arden Myrin, and I am here in Bushwick, Brooklyn,
one of the hippest neighborhoods in
all of New York City.
And I'm going to go to a block party and just wander around
Brooklyn and see if I can find out if someone here
will take me home.
Do hipsters really live on the inside as
they look on the outside?
Check it out.
Would you take to take me home?
Would you guys like to take me home?
MALE SPEAKER: No.
ARDEN MYRIN: He just said no.
I just got a flat out no.
That felt like college.
Would like to take me home?
CHRIS: Sure.
ARDEN MYRIN: All right.
What's your name?
CHRIS: Chris.
ARDEN MYRIN: Chris, where do you live?
CHRIS: Upstate.
ARDEN MYRIN: Oh.
Hi, would you guys like to take me home?
SHELBY: What does that mean?
ARDEN MYRIN: Well, basically we've been going around the
city, and we've asking people if they would be willing to
take me home and give me an impromptu house tour.
SHELBY: Sure.
ARDEN MYRIN: What?
SHELBY: Why not?
ARDEN MYRIN: I like Brooklyn.
Do you live near here?
SHELBY: Yeah, we live like two blocks that way.
ARDEN MYRIN: All right.
Let's do it.
What's your name?
SHELBY: I'm Shelby.
ARDEN MYRIN: Hi, Shelby.
JIMMY: And I'm Jimmy.
ARDEN MYRIN: Do you guys live together?
SHELBY: Yes.
ARDEN MYRIN: Oh, hot.
Are you guys a couple?
SHELBY: We live with eight people.
ARDEN MYRIN: I like it even better.
All right, let's go.
You can take me home.
This way?
OK so tell me, your friends who live in Brooklyn, their
places are all amazing?
SHELBY: Well specifically in this area, off the Morgan L,
it's all basically old converted factories.
So you have to get creative.
Otherwise it's like you're living in a warehouse.
ARDEN MYRIN: And are there a lot of different
spaces where you live?
JIMMY: Yeah, it's just really amazing, because all the doors
look the same in the hallway.
And then as soon as you walk in you're in a completely
different space of what you're used to.
ARDEN MYRIN: So every person has carved it out differently?
JIMMY: Exactly.
ARDEN MYRIN: And built their own area?
JIMMY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: OK, I'm going to guess-- now, don't tell me.
I'm going to guess and I don't want to know if I'm right.
Huge ceilings, cement floors, lots of couches, books, rugs,
animals, but like chic--
I believe there will be a kitten or a puppy.
Not like animals, like there's dog *** everywhere.
So this is it?
SHELBY: Yeah, it's too bad you guys weren't here sooner.
Because a couple of weeks ago this was
covered in street art.
They just painted over it.
ARDEN MYRIN: And what are these called?
SHELBY: So this the McKibbin Lofts.
ARDEN MYRIN: These are the McKibbin Lofts?
SHELBY: Yes.
ARDEN MYRIN: OK, these are legendary.
SHELBY: The infamous McKibbin Lofts.
ARDEN MYRIN: These are the infamous McKibbin Lofts.
OK, let's check it out.
I like it already.
SHELBY: So welcome to our home.
ARDEN MYRIN: Oh, what?
OK.
This is awesome.
SHELBY: Thanks.
ARDEN MYRIN: OK, I love all the globes
at different heights.
SHELBY: I found these all in the hallway.
ARDEN MYRIN: You did?
SHELBY: Yeah, one thing that's cool about this building is
people will just leave stuff in the hallway for other
people to take.
ARDEN MYRIN: Wow, so you found all of these in the hallway?
SHELBY: Literally every single globe.
ARDEN MYRIN: I love the candelabras.
SHELBY: Thanks, these were in my house
growing up as a child.
This table was actually built custom for this house.
ARDEN MYRIN: It was?
Did one of the people who lived here build it?
SHELBY: Yes, but he has since moved out.
ARDEN MYRIN: Wait, so this is just your dining area?
SHELBY: Yeah, so this is our dining area, common area.
ARDEN MYRIN: Wow, that's so cool.
I love the shelving with the piping.
It's almost like from a plumbing piping.
SHELBY: That's exactly what it is.
We lived with these two Australian girls who have
since moved out.
Both incredible artists.
ARDEN MYRIN: All right, I just want to admit, I was right.
There is a cat.
Can I just start out with that?
Is there one cat?
SHELBY: Yes, one cat.
Who actually--
that park that we passed on the way here, I
found her in that park.
ARDEN MYRIN: She's so cute.
All right, well, show me a tour of the rest of the place.
SHELBY: So this is our kitchen over here.
ARDEN MYRIN: God, this is awesome.
This is huge.
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: I love the gigantic vase and the flowers.
SHELBY: Found it on the street.
ARDEN MYRIN: You found all that?
SHELBY: Free 99, yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: Free 99?
Even with the flowers?
SHELBY: Yeah, totally.
This was like decrepit, ugly colors, I
just painted it black.
ARDEN MYRIN: Repurposing.
And then I love the bottle art, I love the disco ball.
SHELBY: Thanks.
ARDEN MYRIN: And then I just noticed, but when we came in
there's a fencing mask on the wall.
SHELBY: Yeah, our friend's little brother is crashing
with us for a few weeks and he fences, so he
stuck that up there.
ARDEN MYRIN: How did you find this place?
It's awesome.
SHELBY: Craigslist.
ARDEN MYRIN: Just the roll the dice that you're going to like
the seven people that are here.
Were you nervous?
SHELBY: No.
I mean, I came, and I saw the space.
It was very raw when we moved in here, everything was white,
very garage-y, total warehouse.
But I saw the potential of it, and it was cheap.
ARDEN MYRIN: Can I ask you a tacky question?
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: Does everybody pay the same amount?
SHELBY: Yes.
ARDEN MYRIN: And how much is that?
SHELBY: So each person pays $650, but that's
all utilities included.
ARDEN MYRIN: Why would you not want to move to
the McKibbin Lofts?
SHELBY: I don't know.
ARDEN MYRIN: This is spectacular.
I love the artwork over there.
Where did you get that?
SHELBY: My grandmother painted all of those paintings.
ARDEN MYRIN: Really?
All of them?
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: They're beautiful.
SHELBY: I agree.
Thanks.
ARDEN MYRIN: And is that a bedroom over there?
SHELBY: That is.
That is my bedroom.
ARDEN MYRIN: Oh, let's check it out.
Look at this.
Oh my God, I love it.
Black painted ceilings, four chandeliers-- you don't have
to have a big space to have four chandeliers.
Now, did you build the loft?
SHELBY: No, I hired a hipster carpenter to do this.
ARDEN MYRIN: How much did this cost you?
SHELBY: It cost me $450.
ARDEN MYRIN: And I love that you stained-- did you stain it
or he stained it?
SHELBY: Yeah.
And then I built this closet and this desk and the shelves.
ARDEN MYRIN: I want everybody to look.
This is such a great use of space, because she has all of
her jewelry just hanging on the wall, so well organized.
You have beautiful jewelry.
SHELBY: Thanks.
ARDEN MYRIN: It looks vintage-y, is
most of that vintage?
SHELBY: Some of it is.
Some of it I've made, like I've made a couple of the
rings that I'm wearing right now.
ARDEN MYRIN: You made that?
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: How cool is that?
Look at that!
SHELBY: Thanks.
ARDEN MYRIN: Would you be willing to show me downstairs?
SHELBY: Of course.
ARDEN MYRIN: All right, here we go.
SHELBY: After you.
ARDEN MYRIN: Thank you.
I love that there's art all down the stairway!
SHELBY: Creative people live here.
ARDEN MYRIN: This is three floors?
SHELBY: It is, indeed.
ARDEN MYRIN: And you have a salon wall hung precariously.
That is very brave of you, it's awesome.
SHELBY: Thank you.
ARDEN MYRIN: It was worth the effort.
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: Oh, what?
SHELBY: So this is an art studio, music studio, and just
a lounge-- a hammock room.
ARDEN MYRIN: The hammock room.
I like that.
So how many hammocks do you have in here?
SHELBY: We have three.
ARDEN MYRIN: This is awesome.
I love all the macrame.
I love the work studio.
It's low to the ground, the ceiling is low.
I think a lot of people might feel it's
claustrophobic or dark.
And this couldn't be more welcoming, or just the use of
lights and the different magic.
Like, you want to hang out in here.
And these are three bedrooms right here?
SHELBY: Yeah.
So that's our guest room which, if I showed you old
pictures, that wall didn't exist.
We built that.
It was just like a weird little nook.
ARDEN MYRIN: How awesome.
I love that you guys have like a library over there.
SHELBY: Yeah.
ARDEN MYRIN: That's so cool.
It's awesome, you guys have done a great job.
SHELBY: Thanks.
You'll have to sit in a hammock before you go.
ARDEN MYRIN: I'd love to sit in a hammock.
SHELBY: That one's the most comfortable.
ARDEN MYRIN: This one?
This is like the party swing.
Oh, I feel good about myself in here.
It's like everything's safe and is going to actually
finally work out in life.
I feel so ready to move into the McKibbin Lofts.
I'll just move into your swing.
I don't even need to sleep in the guest room.
Well, I wouldn't be a very good house guest if I didn't
come with a housewarming present.
So I actually brewed you up my own vintage of wine.
I don't know if you can tell.
That's me.
SHELBY: You made this?
ARDEN MYRIN: I made it.
I made it.
I made it.
SHELBY: That's really cool.
ARDEN MYRIN: Yeah, so this is for you.
Thank you so much for having me.
SHELBY: Thank you so much.
ARDEN MYRIN: I have to tell you, I am kind of wowed that
Shelby took me home.
So if you don't know where to find me, you might want to
come find me in Bushwick.
All right, bye!
Thanks for taking me home.
SHELBY: Of course.
ARDEN MYRIN: The fabulous Shelby was brave enough to
take me home.
