To take care of the unraveling edges of fabrics, what we need to do is overcast these edges.
For example, this is a woven, we'll call it woven medium. If we pick technique number
two in the sewing advisor it will say overcast, it will pick the right stitch, and tell me
to put foot J on. Now, J has a very unique part. Number one, it just has one toe so it'll
make it really easy to just run the fabric right along this edge.
You see that little pin in there? That pin has got a support so when the stitch goes
off the edge of the fabric, the fabric's not going to, kind of, roll over itself. We'll
just switch the feet on and we'll show you how we would go along a single edge of the
fabric. I would practice, just so you know where to guide the fabric. You push the down
arrow on this presser foot button ... if you push it twice it's going to go down and then
come up and now it's hovering.
I could move the fabric back and forth and find out where I really want to set that.
Then once it actually starts it's just going to go ahead and jump over that little pin
and make a perfect overcast stitch all the way down. Now, once you're done with your
edge keep in mind that sometimes if you're just going to turn a corner you might still
have a thread on that pin. You'll kind of need to pull that off. Look how pretty that
edge is and look, those threads aren't going to come unraveled any further at all.
