Bringing_Community_Library_Service_to_Rural Wisconsin
Fred Marini: Our district takes on parts of Jackson, Munroe, and La Crosse County. And
whether or not a school district does not have any public library, we do have winning
rivers, van delivery, you know every loan but no public library.
So sometime back, we got together with our community leader, they got together with us
and we offered to have sections in our school libraries for the community. And they can
check out their school books, they could check out the community section, whatever was needed.
And that's worked out fairly well. And it now rolls the largest of the town which is
a 500-some population. The town provides us to have one of our libraries, Monday night
year-round so we can have our school library to people and they have access to our computers
and all that. Mindoro, we didn't have it in our school library until we outgrew the space.
Now we moved to the town hall. There we offered library services, open our collection. We
also do a lot of programs through our friends with the community library area and with help
from La Crosse County, we've had a number of things from other local ones. Citizens
coming in talking about Hmong culture, they draw huge crowds. It was had to move to a
large rooms because they couldn't hold everybody to have a tribune night, to have authors come
in, just any number of things that have been over that.
The biggest one is the rural history for Mindoro and Farmington. Of course, we have the National
Mindoro Cup that we have. It'll help celebrate a centennial of that.
