Thank you for visiting our educational roof cleaning site. Here you will learn about the
importance of a clean roof in regards to preventing leaks and prolonging the life of your roof.
I want to congratulate you for being proactive regarding the care of your roof.
We constantly see roofs that have either leaked or have been damaged beyond repair due to
lack of cleaning or improper cleaning methods. Everyone agrees that moss and tree debris
look bad, but most people aren’t aware of the damage these issues cause to roofs. Due
to this lack of knowledge and the risk of injury, issues could go undiscovered until
the damage is irreversible.
We hope this is not the case with your roof. If you feel that your roof is in need of cleaning,
contact us for a free no-obligation evaluation. One of our technicians will evaluate your
roof and share their findings. If cleaning is needed, they will share what your options
are, and the special methods we use to make your roof look good and last longer.
Thank you for checking out our roof moss and algae video. If you are like most people,
you are probably wondering, what is roof moss? Does it damage my roof? Let’s start with
algae.
Algae is the black staining that you see on roofs. It looks bad and is usually followed
by moss. That is the green fluffy stuff you see on the roof. And when you add tree debris
like needles and leaves, then these issues can be compounded. Not only does this stuff
look bad, but it is also very destructive. The tiny moss roots dig into your roof and
pull away at the surfacing. This reduces the roof life. And when it creeps under the roofing
material, it breaks the seal which makes it vulnerable to wind blow-off.
In this example, you will see where moss has eaten a hole in the roof. You can also see
when moss is brushed away the roof’s granular surfacing has been compromised. This makes
the roof vulnerable to UV degradation.
So how do you keep the roof clean? There are some common methods. One is to use a zinc
strip; zinc does kill moss but typically only for a few feet down the roof and only for
a limited time. As you can see here, moss is growing right on top of the zinc in the
photo. On top of that, you also have to nail through the roof to install the zinc strip
which is also a bad idea. Other people want to use a zinc- or chlorine-based detergent
on the roof. These are corrosive chemicals that are bad for the environment and the worst
part about these products is that they don’t keep the moss from coming back. And lastly,
there is pressure washing. This can damage or even destroy the roof.
So we’ve developed the Guardian solution. We start with a professional consultation
and diagnosis. Then we use our gentle process to remove the big moss and debris from your
roof, which exposes the algae. We then apply our environmentally safe algae-loosening solution
and gently rinse away the left-over debris leaving a clean and safe roof. Our process
works for asphalt composite, concrete tile, and wood shake. And of course it does make
a big mess while the job is being done, but don’t fret. Our professional technicians
thoroughly clean up before they leave.
