Reporter: Hi. Do you think beef is a sustainable food source, and did the discussion change
your thoughts on that?
Interviewee: Actually, for a long time, for ten years, I was a vegetarian and did not
eat meat at all. The state of the Australian beef industry was one of the things that led
me to be a vegetarian because I was worried about soil degradation, carbon intensity,
and water intensity of beef production.
Actually seeing this presentation today about sustainable farmers who are really caring
for their product and managing the full life cycle of the product, from the soil to the
water cycle to the quality of the grass that they're feeding their stock on, all the way
through the supply chain, to how it's transported and how it's cut, and then how it's ultimately
distributed and the amount of waste that gets produced and minimized, in fact.
It's, I think, really encouraging to see the change that I wasn't aware of that's happening in the beef industry
These kinds of producers that I've seen today are really demonstrating that you can be sustainable and produce beef
So it did change my point of view quite a lot.
