Hundreds of Hawkes Bay Maori have witnessed the unveiling
of carved posts in an emotional dawn ceremony.
The 18 posts represent ancestors from the region,
and give the wider community a chance to learn
about the region's Maori history.
These posts are representing the various marae of Hastings.
The wider community and the families representing the marae
have gathered with Tuhoe,
who gifted the wood for carvings from Waimana.
When our youth become adults,
they'll be asked what these posts represent,
and they'll be able to explain.
These posts also embody the Matariki cluster,
when their lights shine,
it's a signal all is well with our people.
