>> The Spanish interpretation of subiendo means climbing or going up and that's exactly
what happens to a group of high school students every summer on the UT campus, the opportunity
to rise above and change their outlook not only on college prospects but on their future
in general. >> The Subiendo Academy brings in a whole
host of students from the around the state who have a true desire to expand on their
leadership capabilities and to really strive to solve the challenges that the state is
facing. We have the need and the want and desire to be successful. We just don't find
the means to do it, and so this program will give you the means.

>> For a lot of them it's the first time they've been to a university campus from any of our
students last summer for somebody who'd been on an airplane they're seeing that the limitless
opportunities that are available to them. >> The program sponsored by the McCombs Business
School lasts five days and has been in existence since 2010. At Subiendo, the students are
exposed to influential leaders while dealing with a variety of topics, everything from
statewide issues to etiquette classes. >> They work on their writing skills, communications
skills, teamwork, how to be a leader and that last day, they are presenting their policy
ideas. And we have four days to work on this public policy project. They have to find a
solution to a real life problem. >> With reflexes producing the half life from
10,000 to 9 years to >> They're trying to bring the problem and
trying to address it at the capital and fix on a great presentation and really amazing
thing to see. >> It's pretty incredible to see the potential
that these kids have and we wanted to do everything we can to foster that. You can do this, there's
no question you can do this and we expect you to do this because your state needs you
and your family does too.
