One of the classic all-time baits, for almost any species that you want to catch in freshwater,
is the maggot.
In recent times a rig has evolved that has proven absolutely devastating in catching
big carp, bream, tench, chub, barbel...you name it...any thing that eats the maggot that's
got a sizeable mouth will get caught by the Mag-Aligner. And Gardner Tackle sells them
on a nicely coloured, skinned hooklink (Trickster Heavy 15lb) with a soft core, and mounted
on our ever-faithful size 12 Mugga hook.
To set up the Mag-Aligner Rig is simplicity in itself. All you need is a few simple components
like Covert size 8 and size 12 Flexi-Ring Swivels, an Arrow Bead and an inline lead.
If you thread the Arrow Bead on to your mainline, followed by a size 12 Flexi-Ring. And then
thread the mainline through the bore of your inline lead, tying it to a size 8 Flexi-Ring
Swivel, you are almost ready to go.
This is how your finished lead arrangement should look. Note that the size 12 Flexi-Ring
Swivel has now got a Covert Q-Ring for quick attachment of your hooklink onto, and PVA
Bags containing maggots for free bait can be tied onto the Flexi-Ring Swivel at the
base of it.
Once you've threaded 3 maggots onto the Mag-Aligner Rig and placed a handful of maggots into a
Micromesh PVA Bag tied to the Flexi-Ring Swivel, it's simply a case of nicking the hook onto
the PVA Bag and you're ready to go.
You can cast out a superb presentation that will catch fish from almost any venue.
