You know I'm often asked even though I have a hearing loss in both ears, can I just wear
one device?
95% of all the hearing instruments fitted in our office are binaural which means one
for each ear. And, there are 3 reasons why. Number 1, it takes two synchronized ears to
be able to give the best possible hearing in groups, background noise, meetings. On
ear alone doesn't allow for that separation of sound, the ability to bring the voice out
of the background into the forefront. Number 2, two instruments provide better localization
of sound. So, if someone talks to you from the right or from the left, you're able to
tell where they're coming from. Number 3, which is equally as important, is balance.
When one has an instrument both ears and more balanced in their hearing, and they don't
have to keep turning to better hear in order to be able to hear somebody on the other side.
These are the 3 primary reasons but there is a fourth. The fourth has to do with leaving
one ear unstimulated. Recent studies have shown that those that have only worn one instrument
throughout their lifetime actually end up with a little greater loss over time in the
ear that was not aided. These are again very important reasons to consider 2 instruments
when they're recommended by your audiologist healthcare provider.
