you have suggestions for the show people are asking us questions a lot is going
on on reddit excellent idea from a
you different audience members who suggested it remember the holocaust
venture capitalist this is Tom Perkins he's the guy who
compared the liberal attempts to reduce income inequality
to Nazi Germany's war on the Jews
and during his apology or explanation he said that his watch
cost as much as 6 Rolexes remember this guy
all okay here is the latest from him he is now saying
that rich people should get more votes he said number one
only taxpayers should have the right to vote I guess that means everybody who
pays any kind of tax if you buy anything ever
and pay sales tax I guess that qualifies you but also here's the really
interesting part he said
wealthy Americans who pay more in taxes should actually get more votes is a pure
corporation
that is a million dollars in taxes then you should actually get
1,000,000 votes this was his big idea when he was asked to send a form
what would be your big change to our system that we have here in this country
in his idea was I I think that the idea would be you pay a million dollars in
taxes you get a million votes how is that
now the audience at the Commonwealth Club laugh there was really no
indication that Perkins was even
remotely joking about this he seemed completely serious
this is actually not a crazy idea
not in that it's not outrageous but that's a plutocracy
okayed it it is not a democracy that he's describing it's not that far
from what we have right now we have a situation where the candidate
for elected office national office mostly who raises more money
wins eighty-four percent of the time bills are passed that disproportionately
favor are suggested by or otherwise disproportionally benefit the rich over
the poor
the great majority of the time the amount of money that goes toward
subsidies tax cuts
tax breaks and accounting loopholes for the rich
and large corporation dwarf those for the poor
we basically have the system Tom Perkins
is describing implicitly he just wanted to be
explicit you actually just get more boats on paper
at David if they were explicit I think maybe people would realize what's going
on
for help a little bit here so if he were smarter he would actually realize doing
it implicitly is way better because most people are busy with their lives
they don't want to be following the money and lobbyists in all this stuff
that's actually probably more effective than just saying hey
a million bucks a million votes yeah they were explicit but certainly be
outrage but
biz implicit system has been working for him quite well so I think
you should be pretty happy with it
